Call for Entries_ Fotofilmic '14

Fotofilmic was founded by VNB in 2012 as a global film-photography publication and curation platform dedicated to emerging and unknown photo talents attached to film worldwide. FOTOFILMIC’14 is the 2^nd edition of FotoFilmic’s annual and global film photography competition following last year’s inaugural FotoFilmic’13 Competition.

Each edition of the FotoFilmic Competition involves 2 parts:

- 1^st a 6-month online curated SHORTLIST of 90 film photographers selected through 3 consecutive 2-month calls (ShortList1, ShortList2 and ShortList3 with 30 artists per list)

- 2^nd an international juried exhibition of contemporary film photography – FotoFilmic’14 this year – featuring 30 final winners and prints from the completed SHORTLIST.

The exhibition, juried by an international panel of famed film photographers and established photography artists, features 3 Cash Prizes (1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd Places), 2 Honorable Mentions (4^th and 5^th Places) and 1 Exhibition Catalog publication (EXHIBITION + SHORTLIST).

The 2014 Missouri Photo Workshop will take place in late September in a yet to be announced Missouri town.

To apply, please download and complete the following application form. Be sure to include a brief letter about why you want to participate in the Missouri Photo Workshop, a résumé, and a reference letter from a professional journalist, photo editor, or educator outlining how he or she things you would contribute to and benefit from the workshop. Additionally, we request that you include a portfolio with twenty (20) images (prints or CD). See application for more details.

Vermont Center for Photography Call for Entry

The Art of Handmade & Alternative Photography – A Juried Exhibition

The Vermont Center for Photography is proud to introduce our latest call-for-entry for our upcoming juried exhibition featuring photography of any subject matter using any type of alternative or handmade photographic process to create the printed image. The image can be captured using a digital SLR, but the resulting print on display must be achieved using a handmade process.

We are looking for those who are working in these mediums to submit up to FOUR images to be considered for a month-long juried exhibition at the Vermont Center for Photography. All work should be framed or “ready-to-hang” upon arrival. Please refer to the important dates below for reference:

You can submit up to 4 images for consideration.  Images should be saved at 300dpi with the longest edge measuring 7''. Please save all files as ".jpg" files.

"Dumb Starbucks" Parody Coffee House

Thought this would be relevant to today's lecture. An interesting piece of "art"has popped up in LA. Gawker wrote an article on it and it has been all over Tumblr. The shop claims legality by advertising themselves as an interactive piece of art and that everyone who buys coffee is buying a piece of the "art".

Oaxaca is an architectural gem, filled with museums, festivals, pre-Columbian ruins and baroque churches encrusted with gold. UNESCO declared the city a World Heritage site. Debbie Fleming Caffery Debbie Fleming Caffery is highly regarded for her work in documentary photography.  She is the winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship, The Katrina Media Fellowship, Open Society Institute, George Soros Foundation, Lou Stoumen Award from the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, Michael P Smith Documentary Photography Award, Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. She has documented the Louisiana sugar cane harvesting for 39 years with a book published by the Smithsonian Press, "Carry Me Home," with a one person show at the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C. Other books are "Polly" and "The Shadows," published by Twin Palms Press, "The Spirit and The Flesh,"  published by Radius Books, Collection L'Oiseau Rare, Filigranes Edition, France. Her work is included in numerous collections internationally, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of Art, Metropolition Museum of Art in New York, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Elton John collection and many more.   debbieflemingcaffery.com Ernesto Bazan Ernesto Bazan was born in Palermo in 1959. He received his first camera when he was 14 years old and began photographing daily life in his native city and in the rural areas of Sicily. Photography has been more than a profession: a true passion, a mission in his life. Bazan has published several books: The Perpetual Past, Passing Through, The First Twenty Years, Island, Molo Nord. In 2008, his recently launched publishing house, BazanPhotos Publishing, released his book Bazan Cuba on his fourteen years of life and photography on the island. In May 2009, the book was awarded Best Book of the Year at the New York Photo Festival. The photographer's next book, Al Campo, an in-depth color exploration of life in the Cuban countryside, was published in 2011 also by BazanPhotos Publishing. He has won some of the world's most prestigious photographic awards, among them The W. Eugene Smith Grant; Mother Jones International Fund for Documentary Photography, the Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize, the World Press Photo award and fellowships from the Alicia Patterson Foundation and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He has had exhibitions in Europe, Latin America and the United States. His photographs have been acquired by collectors and museums including MoMA and ICP in New York, SFMoMA in San Francisco, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, the South East Museum of Photography in Daytona, the Fondazione Italiana della Fotografia in Turin, the Biblioteque Nationale in Paris and the Musee Rattau in Arles. He lives in Veracruz, Mexico with his family and their dog Diva. bazanphotos.com  Ernesto Bazan's Workshop Approach This one-week workshop in Oaxaca represents a great, incredible opportunity for students of all levels to work with Debbie and me. I've been photographing and teaching workshops in Oaxaca for over a decade. It's a place that mesmerized and captured my attention back in the 80's when I went there for the first time. Since then, I've returned many times and photographed extensively during the Day of the Dead celebrations and daily life in Oaxaca and in the outlying villages of Ocotlan, Tlacolula, Atzompa to mention a few. Working with one of the peers I greatly admire, this workshop is a dream come true and a wonderful opportunity to work with our students in a place that has been a great source of inspiration. We will have the opportunity to share many photographic adventures and personal stories with our students. During this course we'll do our best to help each student get better both in picture taking and in editing his or her own work. On the first day, we will go over each student's portfolio (no more than 30 images that can be either part of a single story or single images) to help them edit down their work and weed out their weakest images. During this session, Debbie and I will set the bar for each student. The challenge during the workshop will be to stay on top of it or raise it even further. In the afternoon, we will go our to explore the Oaxaca historical center. In the following days, we will alternate shooting and editing sessions. We will be doing so for the next five days in the hope of capturing some of the essence of this place and its people. On our seventh day, the last day of our workshop, we will be doing the final edit and presentation of each student's work. Breaking into the creative industries is tougher than ever before. That’s why we’ve partnered with IdeasTap to offer 20 photographers an incredible training opportunity.

Aimed at photographers at the start of their careers, Magnum’s Professional Practice event is a two-day masterclass hosted at Magnum Photos’ London Print Room, organised as part of IdeasTap Inspires.

During the weekend high profile photography experts will discuss the practical business of photography and pass on their invaluable industry knowledge.

Topics covered may include: the commercial print sale market, advertising shoots, commissioning for NGOs, image licensing, publishing photographic books, the modern editorial market, funding and organising exhibitions.

A second day will provide photographers with an opportunity to have an honest, constructive critique of their portfolios, by our industry specialists.

The weekend is a unique opportunity to begin establishing a professional network of peers and useful industry contacts, and to identify entry realistic routes into employment.

Previous speakers have included Monica Allende – Sunday Times Magazine, David Birkitt – DMB Media, Steve Macleod – Metro Imaging, Cheryl Newman – Telegraph Magazine, Michael Mack – MACK and Greg Hobson – National Media Museum.

Photoworks Call for Entry

Photoworks is an organization dealing contemporary photography.   They are having a call for entry for their annual publication that will be coming out in October.  The theme is collaboration, whether it is the subject or the process that the images are made.  

Submissions are free and the deadline is March 10th.  

It's just a portfolio submission so all you have to do is send a link to your work and short statement about it.
