Cuban artists plan to stage alternative Havana biennial

A group of Cuban artists plans on Saturday to launch a biennial independent of state institutions on the Communist-run island, despite fierce opposition from the government, which has called it a “provocative maneuver.”

PILARA FOUNDATION COLLECTION

Revelations – the Diane Arbus retrospective organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2003 – inspired the purchase of the Pilara Foundation’s first photograph, a portrait from her challenging and emotive Untitled series. The emotional intensity characterizing this photograph has informed subsequent acquisitions for the collection, which now exceeds over 4,000 works spanning the history of the medium and its international breadth. At the collection’s core are those photographers first exhibited in two seminal twentieth century exhibitions: New Documents (1967) at the Museum of Modern Art and New Topographics (1975) at Eastman House. In recent years, the Foundation has collected more emerging photographers in depth, developing holdings that speak to evolving practices within the medium.

Photographer Rose Smith documents life in Atlanta’s Vine City neighborhood

Photographer Rose Smith’s exhibition Inner City Urban: Vine City, on view at the Auburn Avenue Research Library through April 29, documents the people and places of Atlanta’s Vine City neighborhood. ArtsATLrecently met with Smith in the gallery to discuss her body of work and reflect on its impact.

Agnes Gund

President Emerita, The Museum 
of Modern Art

Agnes Gund is president emerita of the Museum of Modern Art and chair of its 

International Council. She is also chair of MoMA PS1. Ms. Gund joined the 

MoMA Board in 1976 and served as its president from 1991 until 2002. 

She is the founder and board chair of Studio in a School, a non-profit organization 

she established in 1977 in response to budget cuts that virtually eliminated arts 

classes from New York City public schools. In January 2012, Ms. Gund was 

appointed member of the New York State Council on the Arts. A philanthropist 

and collector of modern and contemporary art, Ms. Gund currently serves on 

the boards of Chess in the Schools, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Foundation 

for Contemporary Arts, the Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies, and 

Socrates Sculpture Park, among others. She is co-founder of the Center for 

Curatorial Leadership and an honorary trustee of the Independent Curators 

International as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland. A civic leader 

and staunch supporter of education, women’s issues and environmental concerns, 

among other causes, Ms. Gund is the former chair of the Mayor’s Cultural Affairs 

Advisory Commission of New York City and has served on the boards of such 

wide-ranging organizations as the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center, the 

Frick, the Fund for Public Schools, and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. 

She earned a B.A. in History from Connecticut College and a M.A. in Art History from 

Harvard University. She has received numerous honorary doctorate degrees, 

including honors from Bowdoin College (2012), CUNY Graduate Center (2007), and 

Brown University (1996). In 1997, Ms. Gund received the National Medal of the 

Arts from President Clinton.

What It's Really Like to Turn Travel Into a Full-Time Job

For these women—most Instagrammers, famous or not, are female, making up about 70 percent of the app according to Omnicore—keeping up with the app is enough work for a full time job. And for many, that’s exactly what it is. Beyond traveling, shooting, and updating Instagram Stories (which disappear after 24 hours) on the fly, most post at least one image a day from their travels. (All admit that they spread photos from their travels out over months.) Depending on the account’s aesthetic, those photos may be of sweeping landscapes, perfectly executed “candids,” or action shots on the ground. Often, it’s a mix of the three.
