The International Photography Awards conducts an annual photography competition for professional, non-professional, and student photographers on a global level, creating one of the most ambitious and comprehensive competitions in the photography world today. The IPA recognizes photography’s leading talents who are creating, shaping and defining the world of photography today.

The Bull Street Light Room

Hi everyone!

The Bull Street Light Room came up in a conversation I had regarding photo, video, and event space. 

Considering it being in Savannah and we have Adler Studios for free, this can be quite pricey. Though, from what I'm aware, there are student discounts but I'm unsure of how significant the discount is.

Regardless, it's nice to know as an option though. It may help someone who is in a pinch or needs studio space with the ability of having more models than what we are available at Adler. 

It can also be rented out a gallery space, which could also be very beneficial!

International Portfolio Competition 2021

About the Competition
Soho Photo Gallery, located in lower Manhattan is New York City’s longest-running cooperative photography gallery. The gallery is awarding solo shows to four winning photographers. A panel of jurors will make their initial selections based on digital submissions. Final selections will be based on prints.

The Jurors
Members of Soho Photo Gallery’s Portfolio Review Committee will jury the competition. The committee has reviewed thousands of portfolios since the gallery’s establishment in 1971 and has exhibited prints by some of the finest contemporary photographers throughout the world. 

The Sponsor
Pina Zangaro, designers and manufacturers of fine presentation books, is providing customized portfolio boxes to each winning photographer. 

Submission
One portfolio consists of 12-15 compositionally and technically strong images, with a consistent theme or topic.

"The first step to making a successful photobook isn’t what you think it is" by BRITISH JOURNAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY

"To mark the launch of the Bob Books Photobook Award, a new competition from Bob Books, the UK based on-demand photobook printer, BJP is publishing a three-part series featuring advice on how to make and promote a photobook. In part one, publishing experts and photographers who’ve successfully made the journey share invaluable advice on what to think about before diving in.

Producing a photobook is an important milestone in any photographer’s career, demanding a huge investment of time, energy, and resources. With so many photobooks being published every day and the bar to entry lower than it has ever been, how do you make a book that does your project justice, stands out from the rest, and most importantly sells?

Publisher Dewi Lewis, who has been in the industry for more than 30 years and has worked on books with photographers including Martin Parr, Edmund Clark, and Stuart Freedman, says the starting point has to be for every photographer to ask why he or she wants to make a book. “Not enough photographers ask themselves [this question],” says Lewis."...

I am excited to share with all of you the opportunity to attend a talk by SCAD MFA Photography alumna Meg Griffiths with her collaborator Frances Jakubek, Tuesday, January 26, 8:00 pm EST.

SPE’s Women’s Caucus (@spewomens) is pleased to present “A Yellow Rose Project: How Far Have We Come In 100 Years?”

Meg Griffiths (@megsheagriffiths) and Frances Jakubek’s (@franciepants) project, @ayellowroseproject, brings together over 100 women all across the country making photographic work in response, reflection, or reaction to the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Griffiths and Jakubek will discuss the virtual archive, book, and exhibitions that make up the project.

August 18th 2020 marked the centennial of the 19th Amendment and a woman's right to vote. A Yellow Rose Project is a large-scale collaboration made by over 100 women all across the country who were invited to make photographic work in response, reflection, or reaction to the ratification of the 19th Amendment.  Co-Founders, collaborators and participants, Meg Griffiths and Frances Jakubek, will discuss the virtual archive, book, and exhibitions that make up the project. Griffiths and Jakubek say, "Our mission in researching the complication of this anniversary was to gain a deeper understanding of American history and culture from this moment in time. Though this movement granted rights to some women, and this achievement in itself is to be acknowledged and celebrated, the struggle did not end there. It was not until much later that all American women, regardless of race, were given the same privilege."

Photographers, there are just 7 days left to submit to the world-renowned Wellcome Photography Prize 2021. 

This year, Wellcome, one of the world’s leading research-based charities, will award £26,000 to photographers covering three critical health issues of our era: Managing Mental Health, Fighting Infections, and Health in a Heating World. 

The prize will include a £10,000 award for two winners, plus £1,000 for each of six nominees, topped off with the prestigious annual exhibition and awards ceremony in London. It’s free to submit. 

For the 2021 Prize, Wellcome is looking for the human stories behind the most pressing themes redefining global health, from mental health problems to infectious disease to global heating. All genres are welcome, from photojournalism and documentary to conceptual and beyond.

We believe that new ideas come from sparks of inspiration and aim to provide just that, access to small and mighty bursts of financial support so that you can focus on making your important and innovative work.

Innovate Grant was created out of the frustration of applying to grants with time-consuming requirements. These lengthy applications took valuable time and energy away from making new work. Countless hours were always sacrificed in either writing artist statements, crafting project proposals and getting letters of recommendation.

“Lose the Film” would like to invite all artists to submit their photographs, or photographic related material, to take part in a collaborative zine in relationship to the idea “Self”.  Black and White, Color, Alternative Processes, Photo Collage, Film, Digital, and any other photographic medium are all heavily encouraged.   

We are looking for work that responds to the call of “Self” from anywhere by anyone of all skill levels.

The Idea of “Self”, self identification, or perception can all be interpreted in the physical form, who are you in your own eyes?  “Self” can also be investigated through the reflections and context of our environment.  This call is looking for all interpretations of what your classification of “Self”, also what the environments that emulate the construction of and embodiment one's self identity. Every interpretation and response to this call are fine, even photographs that had no intent to be a reflection of ones self but after creation the artists resonates with could be ample.  We encourage submitters to go beyond the direct interpretations of “Self”, in a non linear way.

WHEN IS SOIL OPEN?

The gallery is open Summer hours Friday through Sunday, 12 – 5 pm April-October and Winter hours are Friday through Sunday, 11 – 4 pm November-March. You can email us to make an appointment if you cannot visit during open hours. The gallery closes the last Sunday of the month for exhibition installation. We will reopen on Thursdays once the threat of Covid-19 diminishes.

The upcoming 2021 MWCP Juried exhibition is first on the 2021 calendar and we are excitedly looking forward to this new year exhibition calendar. Due to the previous deadline falling on New Years Eve, the entry deadline is extended to January 15.

Open to all photographers internationally. 

$500 in Director's Choice Awards.

The Midwest Center for Photography Juried Exhibition is an annual subject-matter based exhibition for photographers to focus on getting out their best photographs from the various genres and compete for the awards.

The MWCP Juried Exhibition gives $500 in Director's Choice Awards, $100 for each of the five categories:

ARCHITECTURE

DOCUMENTARY

LANDSCAPE

PEOPLE

CLOSE-UP

Each category will also have an Honorable Mention designated. 

Each photograph will be considered based upon the merit of individual images submitted by each photographer. Theme based entries are not necessary and a range of different images from the various categories are preferred. 

Selected artists will have their work featured in the exhibition and online.
