SPE student members can apply for scholarships to offset the cost of attending SPE's 2014 national conference in Baltimore March 6-9, 2014. All awards include a 2014 national conference fee waiver and a one-year membership to SPE.


SPE AWARDS
Ten SPE Awards are offered and feature a $500 travel stipend to attend the national conference.

THE SPE AWARD FOR INNOVATIONS IN IMAGING
The SPE Award for Innovations in Imaging is open to all eligible students working primarily with digital technology and is designated for work only possible because of emerging digital technologies-no alternative processes or gelatin silver prints. A project description describing how the work is possible as a result of emerging digital technologies is required as part of the submission process. Jurors will seek to award work that demonstrates the most innovative, unique, and freshest uses of digital technologies.

Applicants must be currently matriculated students enrolled at a post-secondary institution as an undergraduate or graduate student majoring/concentrating in photography not graduating before the end of the academic year 2013-2014. 

Applicants must be student members of SPE or become members before submitting their scholarship application. Visit www.spenational.org for information.

Applicants are not eligible to receive the same award for two consecutive years, and cannot receive two awards in one year.

A cohesive body of work with no more than FIVE images. Images around 1280 x 1280 px @ 72 ppi are ideal for good image quality and fast upload

A succinct artist statement of 200 words or less

A statement addressing how attendance at the conference will benefit you, as well as an overview of prior involvement with SPE or other arts organizations

A description of the conceptual basis of your work and its technical qualities, including a description of processes used 

A brief resume, including name, address, phone number, email address and current institutional affiliation, and educational and professional experience 

Contact information for a current photography professor (include name, title, email, and phone number) 

Applications that do not fulfill all requirements may be eliminated from the competition.

1st Annual MINT Gallery All Media Juried Exhibition: Live Amateurs

MINT is proud to announce an all-media call to artists for “Live Amateurs”, our 1st Annual Juried Exhibition to be hosted at MINT Gallery in Atlanta, GA in January 2014. Juried by artist Craig Drennen, “Live Amateurs” seeks to showcase the work of some of the most dynamic and innovative emerging cultural producers currently working in the Southeastern United States. Eligible artists must over the age of 18 and currently reside in Southeast United States (AL, AR, DC, FL, GA, KY, LA, MD, MS, NC, SC, TN, VA, WV). All media are welcome including, but not limited to, drawing, painting, sculpture, design, glass, metalwork, photography, video, audio, mixed media, installation, and performance art. There are no limitations on scale or content. AWARDS All participating artists shall receive discounted accommodation at the neighboring Highland Inn for the weekend of the opening reception (January 11, 2014). One artist will be selected for a solo exhibition at MINT Gallery to take place in Summer 2014. During the week of installation for their solo exhibition, MINT shall provide the selected artist complimentary accommodation at the neighboring Highland Inn, as well as an honorarium for supplies and an installation assistant for the week. JUROR STATEMENT The term "live amateurs" originated in the early days of adult entertainment, but lives on in the online environment. The terms "live" and "amateur" are presented as a sexier alternatives to recorded, scripted professionals. Within the art world it's not uncommon for the unpolished directness of amateurs to be valorized as authenticity. There are also plentiful cases of professionals shamelessly plundering the traits of amateurs. But it may simply be that emerging artists are amateurs in the early stages of turning pro. This exhibition at MINT gallery is meant to showcase the very best artistic qualities that "live amateurs" can provide. JUROR BIO Craig Drennen is an artist based in Atlanta, GA. He is represented by Samsøn gallery in Boston and Saltworks in Atlanta. His most recent solo exhibition was at Ellen de Bruijne Projects in Amsterdam, and he has shown at the Aqua, NADA, Volta, and MACO art fairs. His work has been reviewed in Artforum, Art in America, and The New York Times. He teaches drawing and painting at Georgia State University, served as dean of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture from 2010-2013, and is on the board of Art Papers magazine. GALLERY INFORMATION MINT is a 501(c)3 non-profit, volunteer run arts organization dedicated to cultivating a stronger creative community in Atlanta and throughout Georgia.  We engage emerging artists, patrons, and creative professionals by providing studio and exhibition space, curatorial opportunities, workshops and classes, conferences, and other resources. CALL FOR ENTRIES: PhotoBOMB
In conjunction with PhotoNOLA 2013, PhotoBomb will be exhibited at The Front, a gallery located in the St. Claude Arts District in New Orleans. The exhibition will run from December 14th, 2013 –January 5th, 2014, with an opening reception on Saturday, December 14th and an artist/curator talk on Sunday, December 15th. PhotoBomb will be curated by artists and educators Lee Deigaard and AnnieLaurie Erickson.
THEME
They are looking for photographic works that make creative use of interventions, disruptions, accidents, or inciting events. This could involve the use of systematic processes, or it could be the result of total happenstance. We are interested in seeing images that are unexpected, innovative or visually explosive.
DATES
• Saturday, October 5th: Deadline for submissions
• Late-October: Entrants will be notified of jurors’ decision
• Saturday, December 14th: Exhibition opens
• Sunday, December 15th: Artist/Curator Talk

SUBMISSIONS
All types of photographic and lens-based work will be considered, including video. Up to 5 submissions may be submitted. No entry fee is required. All files must be titled with last name and first name of the artist, plus the image number, (e.g. Doe_Jane_1.jpg). Video submissions must be provided via a working link to view online.
Please include a separate document (word file or pdf) containing the Title Information (Title, Year, Media, Dimensions) corresponding to the image numbers, and a short Statement about the work (150 words). You may also include a url to a website of your work for additional reference (optional). Please send only one text document with your images.

NFC Interactive Business Cards by MOO

Here is a link to the business cards by MOO that I mentioned in class yesterday. The cards have a tiny microchip embedded inside of them. This allows the recipient of the card to use their smart phone to access whatever information you put on the chip (i.e. your portfolio, a video, or adding your contact info directly to their smart phone).

Sunday Portfolio Throwdown! Our conference grand finale! This will be a time to bring your portfolio, grab a table or a floor and share your work with other conference goers. Also during this time we'll have scheduled one-on-one portfolio reviews with presenters from the conference as well as other professionals (see Portfolio Throwdown description on the website for a list of reviewers). Introvert/Extrovert

artcore journal’s seeks content for the fourth issue titled Introvert/Extrovert. Writers, curators, artists, and more are encouraged to submit a broad range of written and/or visual proposals that delve deeply into discussions, criticisms, and visual and curatorial perspectives that speak to the theme of this issue. Some topics for consideration may include but are not limited to—the trajectories and dichotomy of psychological space(s) as divergent perspectives on the meditative, introspective, and withdrawn conditions and its contrasting outgoing, unreserved, and unabashed contrarian course; aligned and disparate occurrences of the introvert/extrovert in contemporary art practice; aspects that correlate with modes of inner and outward visual expressions; investigations of the space(s) between these extreme binary opposites; and evolving and/or radical modes of transitional phases between these heterogeneous subjects—to name a few. TheIntrovert/Extrovert theme of this issue was inspired by recording artist Santigold’s lyrics for L.E.S. Artistes, in particular the following excerpt,

There is no theme for this exhibition. The images will be evaluated as a cohesive body of work, rather than individual images. Fifteen photographers will be chosen to display their twelve-image portfolios in the Center’s Portfolio ShowCase Volume 7 book and online exhibition.

Alexa Becker holds an MA in art history and is the acquisitions editor for photography and art books for Kehrer Verlag, in Heidelberg, Germany.

ONLINE EXHIBITION AND AWARDS

With selection for this exhibition, featured artist’s work will be seen by an international audience of collectors, curators, art consultants, and other advocates of fine art photography. Participants will be included in the Center’s Online Gallery exhibition as well as have their accepted portfolio published in the Portfolio ShowCase Volume 7 Book. Select artists also will receive a blog feature at the Center’s blog, PERSPECTIVES.
ONE SOLO EXHIBITION AWARD One artist will be chosen for a solo exhibition at the Center for Fine Art Photography.
PORTFOLIO SHOWCASE GROUP SHOW The Center will exhibit prints from the selected artists in conjuction with the book launch to promote the artists.
JUROR’S SELECTION The juror will select one portfolio to be the first presented in the book and will select an image from the portfolio to be the book cover.

The world is a colorful place. Despite this, photographers often choose to excise color from the world they capture. Artists working in black and white eliminate the complexities of color to accentuate form, composition, and lighting. The world desaturated is in some ways made more vivid. For Grayscale, The Kiernan gallery seeks photographs of any subject matter that use and celebrate the vibrancy of monochrome. 

Alternative processes, digital, traditional, and toned images are all eligible. 

For this exhibition, juror Blue Mitchell will select up to 25 images for display in the main gallery, and up to an additional 35 to be included in the online gallery. All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced.

About the Juror: 

Blue Mitchell is the Founding Editor of Diffusion: Unconventional Photography, an independent, reader and contributor supported annual that highlights and celebrates unconventional photographic processes and photo related artwork. In addition to organizing and curating physical exhibitions around the country, Mitchell curates Plates to Pixels, an online photographic gallery that bridges the gap between antiquated photographic processes and new digital media. He is a fine art photographer, educator, and graphic designer currently serving on the Board of Directors for Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, Oregon. Mitchell also teaches classes at the Oregon College of Arts and Craft's studio school.

David Elliott is a former director of contemporary art museums in Oxford, England and Stockholm, and curator of the Istanbul Biennial, Sydney Biennale and Kiev Biennale. He studies the production and reception of art, analyzing its spread like a "virus" among various cultures.
