This is geared more towards graphic design but...

I found some of these points helpful in making my promo packet. Really thinking of yourself and your work as a product rather than a project or a series puts things into a new perspective. It reminds me of the importance that you have to sell this in order to be successful. It is more than just sending someone your work, you are selling yourself. You are no longer an artist, you are a product. But hey, its all about making money isn't it? It doesn't matter how much you have to sacrifice yourself. It's all just a business.

The Center For Alternative Photography is a non-profit organization in New York City supplying resources for photographers at any level. While CAP teaches alternative photographic processes through their regularly offered workshops, they also serve as a venue for lectures, exhibitions, and research.

Lectures can be streamed live or you can choose from their archived videos to see contemporary artists discussing their work and processes.

Emiliano Granado is a boss

This summer I assisted Emiliano Granado in Brooklyn. Working with him took me all over New York, to various levels of commercial shoots, as well as to Oregon to spend a week floating down a river for a fly fishing photo shoot. I had a great summer to say the least.

The Print Center Calls for Entry: 87th Annual International Competition

The Print Center in Santa Fe is doing a call for entry the membership fee is $45. The selected participants will be given an online exhibition opportunity, a two year contract with The Print Center, 3,000 in cash or in materials, a Philadelphia Museum Purchase award, and three artists out of the selected will receive a solo exhibition at The Print Center.

Google Acquisition of Nik Software

I know we mentioned this in class, but it seems that Google will continue to update other Nik products besides Snapseed.

After Google bought Nik software last month in interest of obtaining Nik's Snapseed app, many of Nik's dedicated users voiced concerns regarding whether or not Goggle would continue support of Nik's other photo editing tools. Not long after this uproar, Vic Gundotra - Senior Vice President, Engineering for Google, announced that Google would continue to offer support of and continue to improve their high-end photo editing software.

8th Annual Small Works Show December 6, 2012 - January 6, 2013 Deadline for submissions: Saturday, November 3, 2012 440 Gallery is hosting its popular, annual small works show. This juried exhibition will feature any artwork which is small in scale, but large in impact. The exhibition will run from Thursday, December 6, 2012 through Sunday, January 6, 2013. Jurors The jurors for this year's Small Works Show are Michelle Segre and Steve DiBenedetto. Both are well-established New York City artists with extensive experiences in exhibiting their work, as well as in teaching. Segre is a sculptor who has exhibited her work widely since the mid-1990's. DiBenedetto is a painter who has been showing his work in the United States and Europe since the mid-1980's. (See below for More on our Jurors.) Eligibility: All artists who currently reside or work in the USA are eligible to apply. Requirements: Work must be no more than 12" in any direction including the framing or mounting, or video monitors. This will be strictly enforced. There is no theme, but we welcome all media including painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, printmaking, photography, assemblage, video. Work must be ready to hang. Sculpture must be provided with shelf and anchoring for secure wall mounting. Wall mounted monitors must be provided for videos. Fees: The entry fee of $30 will cover the submission of up to three (3) works of art. If more than three works are submitted, only the first three will be considered.  I don't remember how I came across this blog, We Make Money Not Art, but it's one that I like to check out from time to time. The blog's creator is a curator/critic from Belgium, so much of the work featured is from European artists. It's a mixed bag of gallery and book reviews, interviews, and coverage of various art conferences. I always find something new and interesting when I visit the site.

SCAD Alum Mark Dorf doing big things

Have you guys seen what Mark Dorf has been up to lately? He recently got back from an artist residency in Iceland. Im incredibly jealous. He is currently showing in Chelsea. His opening reception was last week. It's very motivating to see a scad graduate doing big things post college. I am very happy that I know mark and can call him a friend.

Questions Answered

In 2011, Foam Magazine commissioned contributors to submit essays, questions, links, etc that pertain to photography. The project brought up questions about the state of the medium as well as provided insight to who the new emerging photographers around the world were. Acre artist residency

This post is for the Acre artist residency. The application for the 2013 will actually be posted soon. 

Acre is a residency based in  ( well near) Chicago. It stands for "Artists’ Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions" They rocus on discussion, and collaboration during your stay.

In their own words:

 "ACRE was founded in 2010 in effort to provide the arts community with an affordable, cooperative, and dialogue-oriented residency program. ACRE’s residency takes place every Summer in rural Southwest Wisconsin. The property, set on 1000 acres of wetland, hills, and farmland, is home to such wildlife as deer, bald eagle, heron, hawk, and rainbow trout, and is strewn with a vast network of rivers and springs. The residency facilities include numerous buildings which provide for expansive communal work spaces, a screen-printing studio, an outdoor wood shop, an art and tech facility, and access to both digital and analog recording equipment. Accommodations are all recently built from salvaged timbers and furnished with individual bathrooms, kitchenettes, and decks. All meals are provided, and are prepared daily using ingredients grown in the surrounding area, which is renowned for its organic and sustainable agriculture and dairy farms. "

Lens Culture FotoFest Paris 2012 at Speos

For any of you guys who like to travel or have friends in Lacoste that are staying after this might be an exciting opportunity to take at the end of the quarter. It will be three days of portfolio reviews that could end up in people receiving book contracts, editorial jobs and more! It would be an incredible cost but it would be an experience worth having!
