NASA Signs Agreement with Nikon to Develop Lunar Artemis Camera

When NASA sends astronauts to the South Pole region of the Moon for the first time with its Artemis campaign, they will capture photos with a handheld camera to help advance scientific research and discovery for the benefit of all. NASA and Nikon Inc. recently signed a Space Act Agreement that outlines how they will work together to develop a handheld camera that can operate in the harsh lunar environment for use beginning with Artemis III. 

Photographing the lunar South Pole region requires a modern camera with specialized capabilities to manage the extreme lighting conditions and temperatures unique to the area. The agreement enables NASA to have a space-rated camera ready for use on the lunar surface without needing to develop one from scratch.

@_davidmolle_ of @atelierdemolle will be holding a pop up event next Saturday, March 2 selling a curated selection antique, vintage, and thrift. A portion of the profits will be donated to @adoptanativeelderofficial , a non-profit org that serves to help reduce extreme poverty and hardship facing traditional Elders living on the Navajo Reservation.

David Mollé is a new york city based photographer, interior designer, and private client antiques dealer. He is also a @scaddotedu alumni and dear friend of ours. He designed the Provisions storefront and we are so excited to have him back in the space for this special event.

We can’t wait to have artist and educator @graceannleadbeater lead us in a still life workshop on Sunday morning, March 3. Grace Ann will walk participants through the still life making by sharing the process of her ongoing photo series, “The Objects of Others,” and doing an in-person demonstration. Attendees will receive a still life bundle (all are welcome to bring their own objects, too) for the morning to design a final composition. Attendees will photograph their final compositions and then receive an 8 x 10 print of them after the workshop. Think two hours of playing and meditating and building and documenting! We will have @origincoffee.bar and @auspiciousbaking.co treats to sip and snack on during the workshop.

Telfair Curatorial Internship

Telfair Museums offers a paid summer curatorial internship for one undergraduate (rising junior or senior) or graduate student majoring in art history or studio art. 

DURATION: Eight weeks, May-August, 9:00am-5:00pm

STIPEND: $4,375 distributed biweekly.

The curatorial intern will be responsible for assisting the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Assistant Curator on various projects including but not limited to: research for upcoming installations, reaching out to artists, data input, online publications, assisting in programs to raise visibility of local artists, and providing tour assistance when needed.

This workshop welcomes artists, photographers and filmmakers who wish to explore the natural surroundings of Seyðisfjörður, while experimenting with photographic processes directly linked to the immediate environment. Guided by visiting artist Sarah Fuller and local photographer Jessica Auer, the group will meet for daily walks and excursions, as well as practice studio-based experiments using natural materials and organic developers such as sunlight, plantlife and minerals. Together we will explore the creative potential of a landscape experience, while considering nature and place as both subject matter and means of photographic reproduction. Hands-on workshops will include phytograms, anthotypes, film soups and eco-developing. For this workshop, participants should be able to walk for up to 3 or 4 hours on uneven terrain.

Recommended for: Practicing artists with an interest in ecology, walking and/or alternative photographic processes.

Eligibility

Open to all artists, world-wide, above the age of 18 years old.

All mediums and styles are acceptable.

(2-d and 3-d media, currently not accepting video submissions, work must be documented and submitted in jpg/jpeg form).

Works must pertain to the theme “Aesthetic Anomalies”, see below for the full explanation of the theme.

The Deadline for submissions is March 20, 2024.

EARLY ENTRY: March 5, 2024

Early entry is recommended; all applications received on or before March 5, 2024, will be automatically shortlisted as finalists, be exhibited in the online exhibition, and move on to the final round of jurying to be considered for awards. (Early entry submissions that do not pertain to the theme, are not well documented, or do not adequately follow the submission guidelines may be excluded from exhibition regardless of early entry status). Select finalists may receive the opportunity for an interview and solo feature on Art-Collide.com.

Awards

For those who win awards, the award money will be entirely at your discretion to utilize as you wish. The prizes to be awarded will be determined based on the number of art pieces submitted and the overall quality of the artwork submitted. Finalists and all award winners will have their work exhibited in the online gallery on art-collide.com starting November 30, 2023.

Portrait: Self and Others

A great portrait reveals something of the depth, history, and emotional state of the subject, at least as captured in a single moment in time. Although many portraits zero in on the face, many fine images don't show the face at all, instead using light, gesture, context, and other nuances of expression to create an informative portrait.

For this exhibit we seek portraits, self- or otherwise, that go beyond the surface to explore a deeper vision of the subject and, hopefully, draw an emotional response from the viewer.

We are very pleased that Aline Smithson will jury the exhibit. She will select approximately 35 images for exhibition in the Middlebury gallery, and up to 40 for our Online gallery. All 75 selected images will be promoted on social media, reproduced in the exhibition print catalog, and remain permanently on our website, with links to photographer’s URL.

 International Juried Photography Exhibition: Diptych

Diptych ~ Open Theme | Juror: Sandrine Hermand-Grisel

A photographic diptych is a work of art that consists of two photographs that are arranged side by side. Diptychs can convey a story by connecting seemingly unrelated images. The use of two photographs side by side can allow the photographer to experiment with different compositions and to create a sense of balance or symmetry. The two images in a diptych can represent duality or opposites. They allow the photographer to explore different themes, narratives, compositions, and contrasts.

Praxis seeks photographic art that explores these concepts. If you haven’t created a diptych this is a great opportunity to experiment with this idea by juxtaposing two images side by side. The submission guidelines for Praxis specify that the diptych must be printable on one sheet of paper and fit into preselected matte sizes. See guidelines. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

Sandrine Hermand-Grisel is a fine art photographer and printmaker. She grew up in Paris and London before she moved to the United States with her family in 2006. Her work has been published in books and magazines as well as exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide.

The Photography Program at Phillips’ Mill centers around the exhibition, although it also includes workshops, lectures, and roundtable discussions. The exhibition is widely regarded as the premier juried photography exhibition in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

This updated and richly illustrated talk provides participants with an overview of the differences and similarities in these path to bringing your project to the book form.

In this richly illustrated “big picture” presentation, Mary Virginia Swanson will explore the differences and similarities between seeking and securing a traditional publisher for your work vs. assuming all aspects of self-publish your book project. This presentation will cover the pros and cons of these different approaches, advice on gaining knowledge surrounding production options, maximizing book launch, marketing timelines and critical resources to help bring your book to its ideal audience.
