Out There - Midwest Center for Photography

Open to all photographers internationally. All photographic media is welcome.

We venture out into the landscape to experience a breath of fresh air, experience some wide open spaces, and simply explore and embrace the outdoors. Taking solace outdoors as a means of escape from daily pressures and the reality of the current state of the world, we seek to get out there and take advantage of this time to explore and find a renewed sense of wonder. We view the landscape while also taking in the intricate details of nature, and embark upon a sense of adventure. Taking roadtrips, we pack up and hit the back roads, we go for walks, get out the bikes, we're going to parks, anything to get outside. All takes and interpretations on the outdoors are welcome. Out here in the Midwesten plains we have wide open skies, let's see how it looks where you are. This exhibition aims to present a positive renewed sense of the asesthetics of beauty in looking at the world.

Selected artists will have their work featured in the exhibition and online.

Selection for participation will be based upon the individual photographs submitted by each artist, individual image selection will be made upon the creative merit and quality of individual images. Theme based entries are not necessary. A brief artist statement is optional.

Subjectively Objective - Submissions

 

Subjectively Objective is a contemporary photography gallery and publisher founded and curated by Noah Waldeck. The type of phrase you could picture as the subject of an Ed Ruscha painting, the name Subjectively Objective sums up our ideas about the nature of photographs. Our main focus is on contemporary landscape and conceptual work that embraces that inherent subjectivity in the photographic medium, depicting the world from the artist’s unique perspective.

Subjectively Objective has a particular focus on contemporary landscape and conceptual photography. We’re happy to accept submissions of all types of work, since we also publish books through Obscura Land which features a broader variety of photography.  We’re most interested in seeing substantial, cohesive bodies of work.

PHMuseum - 2021 Mobile Photography Prize

 

With part of the Generation Z (born 1997-2012) and the whole Generation Alpha (early 2010 - mid-2020s) being the first people in human history to have full consciousness of their image and own portrayal since a very young age, how mobile phones and the digital environment are influencing the perception of the self and the way we live? How mobile phones are mediating our identity through images or simply shaping our persona? What does it mean “to be present” in a digital world base on representation?

With this open call, we wish to reflect on these relevant aspects and invite you to engage with inevitable questions. We are looking for photographs that could help us document and understand this constantly evolving phenomenon. Images that can provoke new reflection to understand how the millenary human fascination for representation and self-representation is approaching this digital era.

At one time the world of living things was classified into two simple groups, plants and animals. Botany concerned itself with the study of plants. We are linked to these, our earthly cousins, in so many ways. As a planetary phenomenon we take for granted that to our yin the plants provide the yang. We breathe in oxygen and out carbon dioxide, they absorb carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. Clearly an elegant arrangement was agreed upon by the forces of the Universe to arrive at such a symbiosis. Whether it be the form of organic plant life, or the concept of its functionality, the implications of its shared existence with humanity, or its clever ability to convert sunlight into food, plant life is as fascinating as it is beautiful. In the context of contemporary society it is interesting to consider what this can mean in the hands of artists.

ELIGIBILITY BLOOM is open to everyone. The only limitation is that entries must represent original works which address the broad theme described above. Submitting the same works shown previously in Manifest's physical gallery exhibits is discouraged.

MEDIA Open to any and all traditional and non-traditional visual arts 2d or 3d media. Manifest's carefully assembled juries change from project to project, and have no collective predisposition towards any particular kind or style of art.

The Photographer Who Constantly Transforms

In their portraits in the American West, Evan Benally Atwood builds a vibrant narrative about trans and Native lives.

Benally Atwood describes their gender identity as an act of reclamation of Diné ancestral knowledge. “The Diné have five genders, and have had those five genders since before colonization. The gender binary was pushed on us. In a lot of Indigenous cultures, gender is psycho-spiritual rather than physiological,” said Benally Atwood. But they also noted that they weren’t taught these ideas about gender variance when they were growing up, and they don’t see it widely taught now. This process of reclamation is ongoing and embodied in their photographs.

In the beginning of our conversation, Benally Atwood told me they don’t know what they are taking pictures of most of the time. “It’s a mystery . . . in an Indigenous way,” they said. “A lot of Indigenous communities talk about Spirit as the Great Mystery—the creator of all. So I try to honor the mystery of existence. I try to honor the land that I get to be on.”

 Angelina has long been involved with the UNHCR as a special envoy and is currently working with @unesco and @guerlain on a Women for Bees initiative that will ultimately build 2500 bee hives and restock 125 million bees by 2025, while training and supporting 50 women beekeepers in their own beekeeping operations. To promote the initiative for World Bee Day, in collaboration with @natgeo, Angelina wanted to do a portrait covered in bees. As a longtime beekeeper myself, when I was given the assignment, my main concern was safety. Shooting during the pandemic, with Angelina, a full crew and live bees made the execution complex. I knew the only way to insure we achieved the desired effect for the photo was to use the same technique that Avedon used 40 years ago to create his iconic portrait "The Beekeeper". I hired my friend Konrad Bouffard, a master beekeeper, to help execute the idea. Konrad contacted the entomologist who formulated the specific pheromone (known as queen mandibular pheromone or QMP) for Avedon and worked with him to capture the unparalleled image of beekeeper Ronald Fisher that appeared in his book The American West. The entomologist offered to let us use some of the pheromone from the Avedon shoot. We used calm Italian bees. Everyone on set, except Angelina, had to be in a bee suit for protection. I applied the pheromone by hand in the places on her where I wanted bees to congregate. The bees are attracted to the pheromone, but it also encourages them not to swarm. Angelina stood perfectly still, covered in bees for 18 minutes without a sting. Being around bees is always an experience that leaves me in awe. I feel like our offering for World Bee Day has its own roots in photographic history. Creating this portrait exactly 40 years later, not only honors bees and beekeepers everywhere today, but also honors Richard Avedon, his iconic image and the technique by which it was achieved. Happy World Bee Day!

ELIGIBILITY

Artists from any country are welcome to apply with works in any medium: painting, sculpture, digital, printmaking, fiber, photography, mixed media, installation, crafts, fashion, illustration, and more.

There is no specific theme for this issue. 

Artists must be 18 and over.

HOW TO APPLY

You may submit multiple entries for different projects/works, there is no limit.

Artists may submit up to 3 artworks per project submission

You can enter multiple times and in each submission you will have the opportunity to upload 3 items

Artists must ensure high quality of images, at least 300 dpi jpeg recommended.

Bio and statement must be under 300 words each. 

Selected artists must be available June 1st-5th 2021 for their interview. Interview questions will be emailed out.

The W. Eugene Smith Grant for Student Photographers is designed to encourage and support students whose photographic work renews the tradition of W. Eugene Smith’s humanistic and compassionate photography. Special consideration will be given to work that promotes social change and that embraces new technologies and image distribution, and that seeks to integrate the tradition of photography and social change with contemporary practice. The Judges will be looking for a photographer and project that seem most likely to use exemplary and compelling photojournalism and documentary photography (possibly supplemented by or incorporating multi-media) to address an issue of import and impact related to the human condition: social change, humanitarian concern, armed conflict, or interpersonal, psychological, cultural, social, environmental, scientific, medical and/or political significance, ideally expressing an underlying acknowledgement of our common humanity.

Applicants should submit ongoing work from a project that would likely benefit from (and likely be concluded if) the photographer were to receive the grant. Applicants may also submit limited supplementary past work on a related subject as a way of demonstrating the photographer’s ability to execute the proposed project. For 2021, the amount of the grant will be $5,000.

Requirements

A biography not to exceed 250 words. A CV of any length (submitted as a PDF) is optional.

The Project Proposal is an executive summary of the project. The Project Description is longer and more fully described; however, this should be concise, journalistically realizable, visually translatable, humanistically driven, and not exceed 3000 characters (approximately 550/600 words). The applicant must affirm that the new or proposed project is ongoing and indicate how they will use the Smith Grant to fulfill it.

Student ID: A PDF or JPG of a current Student ID must be submitted. Submit your Student ID as the 41st image you upload.

IMAGES: Applicants can submit up to 40 images total. These should consist of representative images from the project being proposed to the W. Eugene Smith Fund Grant for Student Photographers. The applicant can include in their submission, past work clearly marked that represents the candidate’s vision and their ability to execute the project being proposed to the Fund.

You Have Two Weeks To Apply For a $10,000 Grant From the Eugene Smith Fund

Rather than awarding $40,000 to a single photographer, this year’s W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography is doing something different: it will award five photographers each with $10,000.

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund has been supporting photographers engaged in compassionate photojournalism since 1979. The global pandemic prompted it to modify its approach for 2020, preferring to spread its annual Eugene Smith Grant between several photographers rather than awarding it to an individual. It’s now doing the same for 2021 with submissions closing at the end of May.

Applications are not cheap, unfortunately — $50, and the date for applying for a waiver has now passed. You’ll need to send a biography of 250 words, a project description of around 600 words, and up to 40 images that demonstrate your vision and capacity to deliver your project.

An educational space committed to the practice of rigorous and ambitious photography, The Humid offers workshops, artist lectures, and portfolio reviews. We want to share our love for the medium with a global community and create a forum for intersecting visions, generations, cultures, and geographies.

Before Covid-19, our doors were open for in-person events attended by participants from all over the United States. Although our physical space is temporarily closed, we are now connecting virtually with photographers from across the globe (via Zoom). Marilyn Stafford Fotoreportage Award

 

The Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award, facilitated by FotoDocument and supported generously by Nikon UK, is granted annually to a professional woman photographer towards the completion of a compelling and cohesive documentary photo essay, which addresses an important social, environmental, economic or cultural issue, whether local or global.

The overall winner is awarded a grant of £2,000 and the runner up receives £500. All shortlisted applicants are featured on the FotoDocument website.

The Award is reserved solely for female documentary photographers working on projects that are intended to make the world a better place and which may be unreported / under-reported.

Entrants must be over 18, they may be any nationality and based anywhere in the world.

It is free to submit.
