Overview: 

How many people can you reach by pushing a button? Do the sheer numbers matter, or the people behind the numbers?  Are your efforts in having a presence online better served by being “followed” by a broad audience, or by strategically posting with searchable hashtags towards being “found” by curators, gallerists, art consultants, photo researchers and private collectors searching for specific visual content?  Can you - should you - have an on-line presence to satisfy both audiences?  

In this illustrated lecture Mary Virginia Swanson introduces strategies for using social media platforms including Instagram to engage followers in your creative practice and move your career forward.  Time will be allocated for a Q&A period.

Call for Entry-- "The Human Body"

I found this call for entry on Life Framer. Since Life Framer's launch 6 years ago they have held 19 exhibitions, $96000 in cash prizes, 4 phonebooks and 128 photographers awarded. You can view their international exhibition spaces on their website. The judge is Sanne De Wilde, a conceptual documentary photographer whose creative and award-winning work explores how genetics shapes people's lives and the way in which they see the world." You can learn more about Sanne De Wilde and her many awards and accolades on the website above. The first and second place winners will have their image exhibited in galleries around the world, cash prizes, and are published in Life Framer's annual photo book. Everyone who joins as a member receives constructive feedback on a series of their work, written by industry professionals. 

It is $20 for one image, $40 for six, and the membership is a $100 which allows you to upload up to 10 images per competition. Below is the brief on their website:

 I found this Call for entry on Loosen Art. Loosen Art is a magazine and gallery space that seeks to connect new artists with galleries. The winners will be a part of a group exhibition in Italy in May 2021. To submit, you must write something short about your artwork. The call is free entry and you can submit 1-3 works addressing the theme:

"Language is a code, “a system of conventional symbols” that we use to communicate a message, an intention, a will, a wish, a desire, but also to share thoughts, ideas and to exchange opinions.

The Awards are a global voice for photography and provide a vital insight into contemporary work today. For both established and emerging artists, the Awards offer extensive exposure.

Now in its 14th year, the Awards consist of four competitions: Professional (for photographers entering a body of work or portfolio), Open (for photographers entering a single image), Student (for academic institutions), and Youth (for 12-19 year-olds).

Always free to enter, there is a competition and a category for everyone – from Architecture, Documentary, Landscape, Portraiture, Sport, Street Photography, Wildlife, Travel, Culture and more. New categories for the 2021 Awards include Object and Lifestyle in the Open competition and Portfolio in the Professional competition.

'STREETS'

Encyclopedia Britannica defines Street photography has "a genre that records everyday life in a public place."
Send a cohesive body of work or portfolio - capturing the weird and wonderful moments unfolding around you! The subject is completely up to you. Any capture method or process, whether digital or analog, including monochromatic toning, is welcome.

Who can enter?
Street is open to all individuals age 18 and older. It is open to professional and amateur photographers alike.

How many photos can I enter?
Up to 40 images. Photographs will be judged individually in a first round, and then as a unified group of photos as they could be published in AAP Magazine.

What is the cost of participating?
$30 (US Dollars) for the 3 first images. $5 (US Dollars) for each additional image.

No Watermarks.
Saved as JPEG or JPG.
Resolution of 72 dpi.

What about copyright?

We are dedicated to amplifying the voices of those who have been overlooked, silenced, and pushed aside. With a focus on equality, social justice, and inclusion we want to help level the playing field for underrepresented artists and communities. Our exhibits focus on issues that relate to race, gender, sexuality, systems of oppression, and the unseen forces driving our lives. Each of our shows are intended to be a starting point for open dialogues - posing a question, asking you to think and react. We do not sell artwork. We believe that artists should get 100% of the sales' money from their work. Links to artist's websites are attached to their names. We encourage our audience to contact the artists individually, and to purchase work directly from the artists. Buying directly from artists helps put more money in their pockets, allowing them to continue to make art, and helps to alleviate economic disparities. 

Entries will be reviewed weekly until the deadline. Artists are strongly advised to submit their entires early. 

Mediums accepted: Original works only, produced in the past 3 years. All mediums (video/time based, 2D, 3D, sound, performance, etc)

Artists own the copyrights to the images.

Alone/Together is a paradox. 2020 has both united and dived the world. There are schisms within our culture that are ever widening. Simultaneously, people are joining together in mass to protest injustices. Wearing a mask can be seen as a simple gesture of kindness towards others; yet may also entice fighting. What does it mean to be alone? What does it mean to be together? What does that look like? Have you felt alone? Have we come together? How have you, as an artist reacted to this paradox?

Selected artists will have their work featured in the online exhibition and via social media platforms.

White is the color of purity and innocence. It symbolizes pure feelings and thoughts. White is good and positive, but apart from signifying good and pure, white symbolizes a whole season as well, winter. It is connected to snow, cold, and festivity. White Christmas, white mountain slopes, cosy atmosphere in wooden huts, while outside everything is covered in snow. 

In BWG we would like to see what "White" signifies for you and how you can relate to this color. Is it something that creates positive feelings or the opposite?

The submission of photos for the specific contest is free. Each photographer can participate with up to 5 files. All photographers, amateurs, and professionals who are over 18, are eligible to participate in the contest. 

In every exhibition there will be over 100 printed photos exhibited. We will also give the opportunity to some artists to exhibit their work on a digital screen.

The artists who will be chosen to participate in the exhibition and be presented at the web page of Blank Wall Gallery, will have to pay the amount of 35 euro, if their photo is printed, and 15 euro if their work is displayed on the digital screen. This way, only the photographers who will exhibit their work will pay a small fee for participating in the exhibition. All the other artists will not be charged. 

The photographs exhibited at the gallery will be printed at the labs of Blank Wall Gallery free of charge. In case an artist wishes to send us the printed photos, they are free to do it. 

Emerging Artists 2021

 

SlowArt Productions presents Emerging Artists 2021, the 29th annual competition for exhibition and $1000 cash award.

All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 96" no wider than 120". Sculptural work must fit through a standard height, 36" wide entry door.

This event is devoted to the discovery, introduction and promotion of Emerging Artists. The exhibition will be held March 4 - 27, 2021, at the Limner Gallery. It will be their first post pandemic physical exhibition.

ABOUT:
the THERE, THERE quarterly is a risograph quarterly presenting a curated selection of works by contemporary artists working with or around photography. Each issue curates select works by three artists into a risograph publication printed using an experimental multi-color combination unique to that issue. 2021 LensCulture Art Photography Awards

 The 2021 LensCulture Art Photography Awards offers free entry on single-image entries. The deadline to enter is December 16th, 2020. Your work will be viewed by an international jury of professional artists. All winning photographers for this award will be exhibited during Paris Photo New York. An opening reception will be held for artists, invited media, photo editors and industry insiders for a night of art appreciation and networking during one the world’s largest international art fairs dedicated to photography.

The 2021 LensCulture Art Photography Awards aim to recognize and reward talented and visionary artists using photographic processes and images to make remarkable work. Those who enter a series or 5+ images to this award will then be able to get written professional review of your submission for an additional $15USD. This is a wonderful opportunity to get specific insight and advice from an industry professional.

Loli Kantor will speak about her early work as a self-taught photographer documenting the performing arts, her long-term, personally motivated project about Jewish life in East-Central Europe today, and her most recent autobiographical work-in-progress. She will touch upon her considerations and choices with each project as well as the challenges she is facing with her current project which uses found archival materials. She will also discuss the journey to getting her monograph published.

Loli Kantor is an Israeli-American photo-artist and documentarian whose work centers on personal, community, and cultural memory. Her works are long-term projects with a depth of content and context. Her most recent completed project centered on Jewish presence and cultural renewal in East-Central Europe, focused mostly on Poland and western Ukraine. As a daughter of Holocaust survivors, her work is deeply personal yet objectively speaks about current events. The project was published as a monograph entitled Beyond the Forest, Jewish Presence in Eastern Europe by the University of Texas Press in 2014. This followed on a previously self-published artist’s book from 2009, There Was a Forest: Jewish Life in Eastern Europe Today, 2005-2008. Kantor is a widely exhibited artist in the United States and internationally. Her work is included in museum collections including The Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, TX), Galicia Jewish Museum (Krakow, Poland), Lishui Museum of Photography (Lishui, China), Lviv National Museum (Lviv, Ukraine). Kantor’s work has garnered critical acclaim in such publications as The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, Dallas Morning News, LENSCRATCH, LensWork, as well as Public Radio International. She has been awarded numerous accolades including Top 50 at Critical Mass, Photolucida (2010) and the Award of Excellence at Lishui International Photography Festival (2009). Kantor was born in Paris, France, and raised in Tel Aviv, Israel. She immigrated to the United States in 1984 and has since lived in Fort Worth, Texas. Todd Johnson is the founder and director of Black Box Gallery. Todd received his MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has been a photography portfolio reviewer for Photolucida and has juried The Drawers Program for Blue Sky Gallery. Todd has worked as an independent photography curator organizing shows by international photographers in Portland, OR, at Linfield College and Gallery Homeland. He has been a college photography instructor for 15 years in Portland. Johnson has exhibited his photographic work in Portland OR, at The University of Oregon (White Box Gallery), Marylhurst University (The Art Gym), Pacific Northwest College of Art, Reed College, Linfield College, FalseFront Gallery and Augen Gallery. Each year our contest seeks creative photographic images ranging in style and technique from traditional to avant-garde, symbolizing the many different world communities that need to come together to overcome today’s daunting environmental challenges. Images selected for prizes and exhibition successfully educate, motivate, or passionately move audiences to engage in preserving our environment!

In addition to valuable prizes awarded to the best photograph in each category (plus the Grand Prize and People’s Choice award), images are seen by regional, national, and international audiences of collectors, curators, writers, and others from the environmental community. We strive to give winners and selected finalists numerous opportunities to be recognized for their accomplishments by showcasing their work in a variety of locations and publications.
