I found these folks to be the most polite, helpful, and eager to close a deal. Others were more costly and would not work on the file placements. The order arrived inside the six day window.

I hope this helps.

Call For Entries: Smithsonian.com Photo Contest 2013

What are the hallmarks of a winning image in Smithsonian magazine’s photo contest? Technical quality, clarity and composition are all important, but so too is a flair for the unexpected and the ability to capture a picture-perfect moment. Over the past eleven years, our judges have seen over 290,000 photographs from more than 90 countries and we once again look forward to viewing the world through your own unique lens.
Enter photographs in any of our five categories—Altered Images, the American Experience, the Natural World, People and Travel—and compete to win cash prizes. This year we are also looking forward to highlighting the best photographs taken with mobile devices, so as you enter your work into the aforementioned categories, let us know that it was taken with your phone or tablet reader and show us the wonders of this new generation of photography.
After reviewing the contest rules and list of frequently asked questions, you will be fully prepared to enter the contest.
The contest is open until November 29, 2013 at 2:00 PM EST. On a weekly basis beginning April 2, Smithsonian judges will post the best of the incoming entries to Smithsonian Retina. Finalists will be announced on March 3, 2014. Good luck to you all!
Our 2012 Photo Contest finalists were announced March 4, 2013. See all 50 finalists, and vote for the Readers' Choice Award winner!

Juror: Todd Johnson
Deadline: April 9th
Entry Fee: $35
Exhibition Dates: May 1-22, 2013

Photography is the recording of patterns of darkness and light. Shadows enhance the relationships of subjects in an image, they give definition and dimension, which compliments the quality of the light values. Photographers have used dramatic shadows and patterns in black and white images and have also explored using ethereal and moody shadows and textures in color photography. We will be looking for a range of how shadow and light are interpreted by contemporary photographers.

Rules: Black Box offers free framing, matting and printing for our exhibitions. The photographers who are selected into the exhibition by the juror will provide a high resolution Tiff or JPEG file for our gallery to print. Oprah is giving away money!

Okay, not really, but...

The Harpo Foundation is currently accepting applications for 10-15 grants (up to 3 years, at $10,000 a year) for visual artists who graduate before June 14, 2013 (sorry, Caitlin and Brooke).

In its grantmaking, Harpo Foundation prioritizes projects that advance and cross the boundaries of visual media and artistic disciplines. Proposals are evaluated on the basis of the quality of the artist’s work, the potential to expand aesthetic inquiry, and the strength of its relationship to the foundation’s priority to provide support to visual artists who are under recognized by the field. Of interest are durational approaches as they relate to changes in the physical environment, or as they inform an artist’s process. Proposals must demonstrate that the complexity of an artist’s project -its temporal and/or spatial dimensions – is time dependent. For example, a project that cannot be completed independent of a particular time frame because its very structure is based on seasonal shifts or a requirement to visit and document a certain place a number of times to collect information or research how a subject changes over time. The foundation is interested in supporting projects that will allow time and its properties of change to become a part of the project’s cumulative process.

The Problems with Tumblr Photography

So a really great art blog, Hyperallergic, and the social media/microblogging site Tumblr are teaming up to present the world's first Tumblr Art Symposium this Saturday, March 9th (livestreamed here from 6p-1a). In preparation for the symposium, Hyperallergic has been posting a series of essays on how tumblr has influenced/effected the art world since it's inception 6 years ago. I'd definitely recommend going back and reading them (especially if you're at all interested in contemporary art criticism), but their most recent post is on how Tumblr has affected the way many artists think about presenting their work is a really great read (plus it references Alec Soth, so what's not to love?).

more printing resources ... with ready made designs

This is another resource that can come in handy in a pinch. Their pre-designed cards are, in some cases, well executed and can be further customized for a slight up-charge. They are quick and their customer care is attentive.

I hope this helps.

(e)merge art fair

From their website:

The third edition of the (e)merge art fair will take place October 3 – 6, 2013, in Washington, DC, at the Rubell Family’s Capitol Skyline Hotel.
Last year, 80 exhibitors presented rising talent from the Americas and Europe at (e)merge. More than 5,500 art supporters engaged with painting, sculpture, digital media, performance and installation works by 152 artists from 24 countries in both our gallery and our artist platforms.
The DC region is home to one of the nation’s wealthiest, youngest, most highly educated populations. (e)merge provides inside access to a rapidly expanding cultural market with immense economic power.
The Artist Platform application deadline is May 18 and notification will be sent out in June.
(e)merge is the only art fair that gives free exhibition space to artists without gallery representation. If you are an artist who is currently unrepresented by a gallery and has not yet had a solo exhibition in a major museum or Kunsthalle, (e)merge is your forum for discovery.
Artists whose proposals are accepted by the selection committee will be provided with exhibition space at the Fair free of charge.
To be eligible for artist exhibition space artist applicants must:
• Be currently without gallery representation
• May have had solo gallery shows, but may not have had a solo exhibition in a major museum or Kunsthalle.
• Whereas work in all media will be carefully considered, projects involving experimental works in non-traditional formats are especially encouraged. Such work may include installation, conceptual art, performance, new media, or the inventive use of materials to express challenging concepts.

quality custom books

In our conversations, we discussed higher end custom books. This is a vendor I have used and to which I can attest. They have a wide variety of covers and papers, allowing more creative freedom as you design the layouts. All in all, they were a relatively painless experience.

Flak Photo Network

"One of the best parts about producing FlakPhoto.com is connecting with photographers, curators and bookmakers I admire - and helping them get their work seen by a wider audience online. The Flak Photo project is just a small part of a vast, interconnected and global photographic community that's growing larger every day. In addition to publishing our respective blogs and websites, many of us have flocked to Facebook to connect with each other, ask questions, and discover photography every day.

So in March 2011, I launched this discussion group.

http://FlakPhoto.com/network

Something really special is evolving here. The Flak Photo Network has grown to more than 5,900 members worldwide, each of them helping to make this space a vibrant community hub brimming with ideas about the current state of photography. My hope is that by hosting online photo conversations in a single place the FPN will make it easier to share ideas and meet photography colleagues using Facebook.

The FPN functions best when we ask questions and share links that encourage thoughtful, extended conversations about contemporary photographic practice and I do my best to maintain that dynamic with minimal moderation. As your host, it's my duty to keep this space intellectually compelling and I follow our conversations on a daily basis."
-Andy Adams

Mary Virginia Swanson mentioned the Flak Photo Network during our "roundtable" discussion today so I just wanted to share the link with everyone.
