"Love + Lust" Juried Photo Competition
Open to Interpretation is now calling on photographers to submit images for consideration in a juried book competition.
Lust is an intense appetite, craving, or untamed desire. We lust for an array of things-money, power, objects, sex, or just living life. Love is a powerful affection or personal attachment and comes in a variety of forms, which can encompass romantic, sexual, platonic, narcissistic, or even religious feelings or attitudes. And sometimes love and lust overlap. Show us your interpretations. Who or what do you love or lust for? What images capture these emotions for you?
Portraits, fashion, editorial, landscape, documentary, conceptual, or any other genre is open for consideration. Color, b&w, iPhone, or alternative processes are all eligible.
Project Details:
Open to Interpretation is a collaborative book project bringing together photographers, poets and writers. Each book begins with a themed call for photos. The chosen photos become the literary inspiration for the writers' submissions. A book is created that matches each winning photo with two stories or poems that offer different interpretations of the image. The unique collaboration adds new dimensions to both the photos and the written word.

Eligibility
Any amateur or professional photographer is welcome to submit work for consideration.
Requirements
Entries are submitted online at http://www.open2interpretation.com/submit_photo_love_lust.html
The image must be original and created by the person entering the work. All images created will be accepted for consideration, including but not limited to film, digital, alternative process, mixed media, digital manipulations, old world processes, pinhole, solar etchings, iPhone, etc. Either color or black & white is acceptable. All images must be submitted electronically. Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still maintain the rights. For a photo in which a person is recognizable, and the image was taken in a non-public setting, you must secure a model release from the subject and provide upon request. Mailed/emailed submissions will not be accepted.
Preparing your Submission
- sRGB or RGB color space (standard) - not CMYK.
- Save files to 72 dpi resolution, flattened layers, 8 bit JPG files.
- Sized to 1280 pixels on the longest side, the other size width or height proportional.
- JPG compression at level 7 (medium). This compression level will not affect the quality of the images viewed on the monitor.
- Each image should be titled.
- DO NOT USE characters other than a period or underscore preceding jpg in the file name. The following characters !@#$%^&*()+?/"~ will lead to image uploading problems.
- Enter zero in the field for width, height and depth.

Considerations
The selected work will be announced via email. Accepted images will be posted online. Open to Interpretation reserves the right to disqualify those who are unable to provide a high-resolution file. Further information will be provided for those that are accepted.
Evaluation Criteria
Judge: Aline Smithson, Photographer and Blogger, LENSCRATCH
After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera.
She has exhibited widely including solo shows at the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, the Lishui Festival in China, the Tagomago Gallery in Barcelona and Pairs, and the Wallspace Gallery in Seattle and Santa Barbara. In addition, her work is held in a number of museum collections. Her photographs have been featured in publications including PDN (cover), the PDN Photo Annual, Communication Arts Photo Annual, Eyemazing, Soura, Visura, Fraction, Artworks, Lenswork Extended, Shots, Pozytyw, and Silvershotz magazines.
In 2012, Aline received the Rising Star Award through the Griffin Museum of Photography for her contributions to the photographic community.
Aline founded and writes the blogzine, Lenscratch, that celebrates a different contemporary photographer each day and offers opportunity for exhibition. She has been the Gallery Editor for Light Leaks Magazine, is a contributing writer for Diffusion, Too Much Chocolate, Lucida, and F Stop Magazines, has written book reviews for photoeye, and has provided the forwards for artist's books byTom Chambers, Flash Forward 12, Robert Rutoed, amongst others.
Aline has curated and jurored exhibitions for a number of galleries, organizations, and on-line magazines. She was an overall juror in 2012 for Review Santa Fe, a 2009, 2010, and 2011, 2012 juror for Critical Mass, and a reviewer at many photo festivals across the United States. Though she was nominated for The Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 and for The Santa Fe Prize in Photography in 2009 by Center, she considers her children her greatest achievement.
