Making and Taking: "Pictures" Reconsidered

A mutual interest linking painting and photography is as old as cameras. Lately, under the digital regime, it has taken a number of new turns. It may be that women have a particular stake in this relationship between the handmade and the mechanically or electronically produced, as between the provinces of subjective and commercial expression. To test that proposition, we are calling for submissions by artists who are investigating the intersection of hand produced and photographic pictures.

Nancy Princenthal is a New York-based critic and former Senior Editor of Art in America, for which she continues to write regularly; other publications to which she has contributed include Artforum, Parkett, the Village Voice, and the New York Times. Her monograph on Hannah Wilke was published by Prestel in 2010; she has also written essays for monographs on Michelle Stuart, Shirin Neshat, Doris Salcedo, Robert Mangold and Alfredo Jaar, among others. She is a co-author of two recent books on leading women artists, including The Reckoning: Women Artists of the New Millennium (Prestel, fall 2013). At present Princenthal is writing a book about Agnes Martin. She has taught at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College; Princeton University; Yale University, RISD, Montclair State University and she is currently on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts.

- All women artists, including self-identified women, may submit original works of art. 

- Painting in any medium, photography, prints, drawing, works on paper, new media, sculpture, mixed media, traditional or non-traditional materials are welcome. **

INTERNATIONAL PHOTOBOOK DUMMY AWARD 2014

The Fotobookfestival Kassel invites photographers to present their so-far unpublished* photobooks to an international public and to eminent experts. In 2014 the best 50 books selected by a pre-jury will be exhibited at international photo events in Athens, Cologne, Dublin, Madrid, Milano, Oslo, Paris, Rome, Paraty and Sao Paulo. From these 50 titles, 3 winners will be chosen by an international jury of experts at the PhotoBookMuseum Cologne in September. The winner of the First Prize will be given the opportunity to realize their dummy as a »real« book in cooperation with our production partner, k-books, Germany, and will be reported on in the magazineEuropean Photography. The First Prize also includes, apart from the book production, the presentation of the photobook-work during the next Fotobookfestival in Kassel in 2015. The Second Prize is a book production voucher valued at € 500; the Third Prize is a voucher valued at € 300 given by our partner, k-books.

Who can enter?
Any photographer from around the world who accepts the terms and conditions can participate by registering for the competition and submitting an unpublished* work as a book. The participant states that the submitted work has never been published by a publishing house.

Guidelines
We require physical printed books of all the entries sent to us by the photographers/authors. Registration closes on (new!) 15 May 2014. The latest arrival date for the dummies is also 15 May 2014. Entries can only be registered online. We charge € 32.00 per entry and book. There is no limitation to the number of entries per person. If you would like your book to be returned to you, then we will require a further postage and handling charge per entry: within Germany € 8.00; within Europe € 13.00; all other countries € 20.00. Payments can only be made online via our Paypal account during the registration process. Dummies that make the shortlist will be shown during photo events in Athens, Dublin, Cologne, Madrid, Milano, Oslo, Paraty, Paris, Rome and Sao Paulo. Because some of these events take place at the same time, we request that you send a second copy of the dummy. You may send two copies anyway or you send one more copy immediatly after getting the information, that your dummy has been selected for the shortlist. The jury session is May 17th. OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: SOHO20 Chelsea Gallery is a non-profit artist-run gallery that has been promoting the work of women artists through gallery exhibition and public programming since 1973.
In a recent review of unfinished European paintings in the Met’s collection, Roberta Smith expresses how such works “… can bring us closer to understanding the mysterious process of painting, and indeed, to painting’s future.” SOHO20 Gallery invites artists practicing in any medium, from painting and sculpture to architecture and design, to submit entries inspired by the idea of a work “under construction.” The precision of a line or the articulation of a figure in a finished work often first begins as a stream of consciousness, a circling of squares, and a squelching of the internal editor. Rather than a sleek surface, work that illustrates process, or is in a state of in-progress, can be more revealing. What do the words ‘finished’ and ‘unfinished’ mean? Can a work of art be under constructed?
SOHO20 will provide promotional marketing support, including post card invitations, and will feature the presenting artists on the gallery website. The gallery will organize an opening reception, to take place on Thursday July 24, which is free and open to the public. Artists are responsible for delivery of artwork to and from the gallery within a designated time frame.

JUROR: Sharon Matt Atkins, Managing Curator of Exhibitions, Brooklyn Museum
Sharon Matt Atkins joined the Brooklyn Museum in 2009 as Managing Curator of Exhibitions. She co-organized the Brooklyn Museum’s “GO” project in 2012, giving Brooklyn-based artists the opportunity to open their studios to the community in order to be nominated for inclusion in a group exhibition later held at the museum. Prior to her move to Brooklyn, Atkins had been the Assistant Curator at the Currier Museum of Art, Manchester, New Hampshire. Previously she was a Research Assistant in the Department of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and worked at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A graduate of Iowa State University, Atkins received an M.A. and a Ph.D. from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, where she also taught art history and writing courses.

EXHIBITION DATE: July 22 – August 16, 2014
Opening Reception: Thursday July 24, 6-8pm

ELIGIBILITY: The open call is open to artists, both men and women, working in all disciplines, including but not limited to: painting, sculpture, photography, multimedia, architecture, fashion, textile and graphic design.

APPLICATION FEE: A $25 application fee is required with each submission. This must be paid online in order for your submission to be complete.

ENTRY PROCEDURE: Entrants must be submitted using the online application form, available through the SOHO20 website. Please carefully review the application requirements listed below.
-Work Samples: Applicants should submit up to three images of proposed work for exhibit. Images should be in jpeg format no larger than 10MB. Each uploaded image must be accompanied by a corresponding Work Sample Description that lists: Title, Year, Medium, Dimensions of the artwork. Artists working in media/performance should submit up to 3 links to online video. Artists may submit up to three additional images at $10 per image.

-Artist Statement: Briefly describe your artistic practice, and how your submitted work is illustrative of the theme “Under Construction”
-C.V.: Please submit a one-page up-to-date CV.

NOTIFICATION: Applicants will be notified in early June, 2014.

PARTICIPATION: All selected work must be received ready to hang, including any hardware and equipment needed for installation. Work must be shipped or delivered to the gallery between July 11 – 18 during gallery hours, 12-6pm. Pick up of work will be scheduled August 17 – 20. Work to be return shipped must include a pre-paid shipping label. All accepted works must remain on view for the duration of the exhibition.

LIABILITY: SOHO20 accepts no responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged artwork and/or equipment. Artists are also responsible for insuring their work if they so desire.

SALES: A commission of 40% will be charged on all work sold through the exhibition. Work need not be for sale.

Call for Artists: ArtRage: the Norton Putter Gallery Juried Show

ArtRage exhibits progressive art that inspires resistance and promotes social awareness, supports social justice, challenges preconceptions, and encourages cultural change. All submissions must relate to the mission statement of the gallery. For more information about the gallery, and to read our mission statement, see our website.

The exhibition is open to all two- and three- dimensional media as well as video. Due to space considerations, no large installation pieces can be considered. Each artist may submit two entries. There is a $25 non-refundable entry fee. Artists must be 18 years or older. Staff and members of the Board of Directors of ArtRage and/or The Cora Foundation are not eligible to participate.

One artist from those selected for this exhibition will be offered an exhibition for a future date. All entries will also be reviewed by the staff of Syracuse Cultural Workers for possible publication.

How to Submit Work
We prefer entries to be submitted digitally by email. Files must be jpg images, with maximum dimensions of 2000 pixels on the longest side, and a maximum file size of 1MB. Images should show the art without mat/frame. Label each image file with last name_first name_title as follows: smith_jane_title.jpg. The file name should not include spaces, punctuation marks other than dashes and underscores, or non-English characters. After paying the entry fee (see below) attach image files to an email sent to: artragejuriedshow@gmail.com.

Video entries should be uploaded to a website like YouTube or Vimeo. Send us a link to the file.

Shipping to and from ArtRage and insurance in transit are the artist’s responsibility, and return postage must be included. Please pack your artwork carefully with padding and we will return it in the same box. The return postage can be a label or a bill of lading from UPS, FedEx or USPS included with your work. ArtRage assumes no responsibility and shall not be held responsible for any damage that occurs during shipping. ArtRage will insure all artwork in its possession from the time of arrival up to the time at which work is sold, placed into shipment for return to the artist, or returned to the artist in person. Insured value will equal 50% of the retail value.

Jurors:

Mary Murray

Since September 1991, Mary E. Murray has been curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute, where she has organized more than fifty exhibitions and written twenty exhibition catalogs, including four collections-based touring shows with scholarly catalogs. Recent contemporary exhibitions include "Substance and Light: Ten Sculptors Use Cameras," (2006), with Gina Murtagh; "Dimensional Line: Recent Work by Sharon Louden and Creighton Michael," (2004); "Resplendent: An Installation by Lynne Yamamoto," (2003); and "Patrick Dougherty: Full Court Press," (2001).

Murray writes and lectures extensively on 20th- and 21st-century American art. She received a BA, with honors, in art history from the University of Maryland, College Park and an MA in art history, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Debora Ryan

Debora Ryan is an independent curator with more than 20 years museum experience. She was curator at the Everson Museum of Art for 13 years where she organized and curated dozens of exhibitions including The Other New York: 2012, a 14 venue, community-wide collaborative exhibition in Syracuse. She holds a Master's degree in Art History from Syracuse University where she is currently a PhD student in Cultural Foundations in Education. Ms. Ryan is also adjunct faculty at Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts where she is currently teaching in the Museum Studies program.

Rose Viviano

Rose Viviano is the founding Director of ArtRage. A native of Syracuse, New York, she received a Fine Arts diploma from the Art Institute of Boston with post-graduate courses in glass painting and structural stained glass from the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. In 1987 Rose returned to Syracuse as a glass studio manager where she developed her restoration skills. In 1994 Rose opened her own studio, specializing in painted restorations of damaged and aging church windows, and creating original designs for clients, architectural firms and gallery exhibition.

In 2008, Rose co-founded ArtRage Gallery, the first project of the CORA Foundation. Her work with ArtRage is the culmination of years of passion for art and social change.

Rose is a recipient of the 1999 Cultural Resources Council’s Individual Artists’ grant; was invited to show her work at the 1999 Contemporary Crafts Exhibit at the New York State Museum in Albany and received the Harley J. McKee Award in 2004 from the Preservation Society of Central New York. In 2010 Rose was honored by Peace Action of Central New York with their Peacemaker Award.

Cell Phone Photography III: Moving Past the Camera

Camera phones are ubiquitous, and photographers continue to take full advantage of this tool as another device for digital image capturing and editing. The Texas Photographic Society is now accepting images taken with a cell phone camera for its latest competition, "Cell Phone Photography III: Moving Past the Camera" which is open to all levels of photographers internationally. Images must be captured with a cell phone camera and can only be manipulated with a cell phone application. NO Photoshop adjustments are permitted! Please submit your entries by Sunday, June 1, 2014. About the Juror:
Nate Larson, Artist & Professor of Photography at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA)

Nate Larson is a contemporary artist working with photographic media, artist books and digital video. He holds an academic appointment at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and chaired the 2014 national conference of the Society for Photographic Education. His recent project GEOLOCATION, in collaboration with Marni Shindelman, tracks GPS coordinates associated with Twitter tweets and pairs the text with a photograph of the originating site to mark the virtual information in the real world. They recently created site-specific public artworks for the Atlanta Celebrates Photography Public Art Commission, the Indianapolis International Airport, and the DUMBO Business Improvement District in NY. The project has received media attention from Wired Raw File, The Picture Show from NPR, Hyperallergic, Gizmodo, Vice Magazine, the New York Times Lens Blog, Utne Reader, Hotshoe Magazine, the British Journal of Photography, Marketplace Tech Report, The Washington Post, among others. GEOLOCATION is featured in the final issue of Aspect: The Chronicle of New Media Art.

Juror's Statement:

My art practice is like a laboratory: a place for formulating hypotheses, testing ideas, building evidence, concocting new approaches, and seeing how thoughts can be pushed into something real. My phone is a key part of the process and always with me. I use it for everything from quick photo "sketches," running a light meter app, connecting to social media to share the process and inspiration, and coordinating upcoming exhibitions or publications. The immediacy of the tool appeals to me - it's the camera that's always within arm's reach, even when out in the world. I watch other artists use it the same way and it excites me to see them unlock the potential of these new tools. I spend a lot of time thinking about the "unfixed" nature of the contemporary photograph - photographs are now more fluid than ever and touch our lives in more ways and ever increasing quantities. The wide reaching technology makes it all possible.

For this curatorial project, I'm eager to engage with images that explore immediacy, communication potential, interconnection, desire to share, and distribution networks. In other words, photographs that interrogate our cultural urgency to communicate.

1. Label each file with consecutive numbers followed by your name, e.g., 1SamJones, 2SamJones. Also, from a networking standpoint, do not use spaces in the title of the JPEG (use underscores if needed) and limit to only alpha-numeric characters (do not use :.:’”/?}{()[ ]+-=*&^ %$#@!.).
2. Files should be no greater than 1000 pixels in the longest dimension and saved in JPEG format on the high quality setting (not maximum). Images should be saved at 72ppi in RGB or grayscale.
3. Attach the files to an email addressed to Shows@TexasPhoto.org. In the body of the email include for each image:
   • Image number, matching the label convention described above
   • Title
   • Cell Phone model
   • Editing application, if any
   • Your contact information: Name, Address, City, State, Zip Code, Telephone Number

If Your Work is Accepted

Your work will be displayed on our website as part of the online exhibition during the dates indicated above. Also, an exhibition catalog will be created to showcase the selected works; copies will be available for purchase through www.blurb.com.

TPS retains the right to display, project, and reproduce work accepted for this exhibition for publicity and promotional purposes only. Individual photographers still retain copyright to his/her own individual images.

Eligibility

"Cell Phone Photography III: Moving Past The Camera" is open to amateur and professional artists internationally. You do NOT have to be a TPS member to enter this competition; however, you may join TPS and enter this show at the same time. Works exhibited previously in a TPS show are not eligible, and all work must have been produced in the last five years. Entries must be submitted digitally. Current members of the TPS Board are permitted to enter, but are not eligible for awards.

Artists have created art in national parks since the late 19th century when famed Hudson River painters captured the majestic views of our nation's western parks. Today, the sights and sounds in national parks continue to inspire artists in more than 50 residency programs across the country.

Whether staying in a remote wilderness cabin at Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska, or contemplating history at the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in Iowa, or working in a contemporary studio overlooking the stone-lined fields at Weir Farm National Historic Site in Connecticut, these programs provide artists with unique opportunities to create works of art in varied natural and cultural settings.

There are programs for visual artists, writers, musicians and other creative media. Programs vary, but residencies are typically 2-4 weeks in length and most include lodging. Often artists are invited to participate in park programs by sharing their art with the public.

JURORS:
Ann Marie McDonnell is an award winning New York-based artist – photographer, printer, sculptor – whose work is project based and thematic. Her work has been shown throughout the metropolitan New York area, most recently in Titanic, A Centennial of Exhibition of Contemporary Art at the Noble Maritime Collection, and in The Art Couple at the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum. Ms. McDonnell holds an MFA from Brooklyn College and is Director of Education at the Alice Austen House Museum in Staten Island, NYC.
Vincent Verdi is a prolific photographer whose approach is very much influenced by his background as a staging and lighting designer. Working with both analog and digital images he creates vignettes in the service of telling stories. His work has been exhibited at galleries throughout the New York area. Director of Photography at CUNY-TV, New York, Mr. Verdi holds an MFA from Brooklyn College.

Me, Myself, I: Best Image that defines who you are utilizing any combination of apps, filters, and techniques.
Me and My Crew: Best Image that defines you and the other beings in your world, utilizing any combination of apps, filters, and techniques.
Dreamscape: Best Image that defines who you are and/or your world as a dreamscape, utilizing any combination of apps, filters, and techniques.
Fantasy World: Best Image that defines who you are and/or your world as a Fantasy World, utilizing any combination of apps, filters, and techniques.
Fairy Tale: Best Image that defines who you are and/or your world as a Fairy Tale, utilizing any combination of apps, filters, and techniques.
Reality Check: Best Image that defines who you are and/or your world as a Reality Check, utilizing any combination of apps, filters, and techniques.

ELIGIBILITY: This call for submission is open to all creators working on smartphones and smart devices. All work must be captured and edited on a smartphone or a smart device. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. 
NOTE: No image edited on a source other than a smartphone or smart device will be accepted.

JUDGING:
Final judging will be done electronically. Decision of the judges is final.

SUBMISSIONS AND FEES:
Only original works may be submitted. They must be in a .Jpg, Tiff or Png. Format. All work must be submitted online only.

Early Bird Submissions: must be received by midnight May 16: $35 for up to seven (7) images, plus $2 for each additional image. 
Submissions between May 16, and 11:59 P.M. EST June 17 : $45 for up to seven (7) images, plus $2 for each additional image. 
All submissions must be online during this period. All entries must be registered and received by 11:59 P.M. PST, June 17, 2014. All entry fees are non-refundable.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: PHOTO AND MULTIMEDIA ESSAYS

 

While millions of photographs are taken daily and posted to Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, and other image sharing services, only a small fraction tell a narrative story and a smaller number would be considered documentary. For this call for entries, SDN is seeking submissions that create a coherent documentary narrative, first with the images and then providing necessary context with text and optionally, sound and motion. All themes, subject matter, and formats are encouraged.

This is the first SDN call for entries where multimedia submissions will be eligible.
Photography is no longer just the domain of the static image. Multimedia has become an important and effective tool for still photographers to add a time-based narrative element, combining motion, text, sound, music, and voice with still and moving images.

Entry Requirements

Deadline for entries extend to: Midnight EST, April 21, 2014
Submission fee for up to 24 still images and one multimedia piece: $25
All entries must have between 6 and 24 photographs related to a specific theme. The submission may also have a multimedia component to supplement the still images. Submissions must also have an abstract to provide context (150 words maximum) and captions to accompany the photographs. Additional text about the situation being documented may also be entered, as well as a bio, and information on organizations working with affected communities.
Photographs must have been taken after January 1, 2009.

Multimedia pieces that accompany the submission must use embed code from a video sharing service such as YouTube or Vimeo to view the video directly on the SDN site. Links to a video on another website will not be eligible. Multimedia pieces must not exceed seven minutes in length and the primary visual source material should be still images. These can remain still or be animated within the multimedia presentation.
Note for multimedia submissions: Use the Video field when creating your exhibit to enter the video embed code. You must also submit 6-24 still images.
All contest entries must be accompanied by full name of the photographer and contact information, including email address and phone number. Minimum of six images is required with abstract and captions.
Winning entries must be able to provide within 30 days of award announcement digital files of at least 3000 pixels in one dimension.
All entries and communications from entrants must be in the English language.

All judges are members of the SDN Advisory Committee. SDN reserves the right to use alternate judges if necessary. The decision of judges is final. Judges are required to review the first 9 images for any entry and may choose to view all other remaining images. If a multimedia piece accompanies the submission, the judges will review it.

• Lori Grinker: Independent documentary and editorial photographer. Author of The Invisible Thread: A Portrait of Jewish American Women (Jewish Publication Society, 1989, 6 editions), and Afterwar: Veterans from a World in Conflict (de.MO, 2004). She is represented by the Nailya Alexander Gallery in New York and has been a member of Contact Press Images since 1988.
• Ed Kashi: Photojournalist, filmmaker and educator. Member of VII photo agency. Author of Aging in America: The Years Ahead; Curse of the Black Gold: 50 Years of Oil in the Niger Delta;, and Three.
• Reza: Philanthropist, idealist, humanist, architect and photographer. Photojournalist for National Geographic since 1991. Author of twenty-five books, winner of the “World Press Photo award”, “Lucy Award” at Lincoln Center in New York and the “Infinity Award” by the ICP in New York, he was honoured with the “Medal of Chevalier of the National Order of Merit”, the “Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service to Journalism” and granted the title “Doctor Honoris Causa” by the American University of Paris.
• Glenn Ruga: Founder and Director, SocialDocumentary.net; Consulting Curator, 555 Gallery Boston; former Executive Director, Photographic Resource Center at Boston University.
• Jeffrey D. Smith: Executive Director, Contact Press Images where he has directed the photographic coverage operations of the agency for more than two decades. Former Executive Director of Woodfin Camp and Associates.
• Jamie Wellford: Former International Photo Editor, Newsweek Magazine. He teaches at the International Center of Photography in New York City and is currently a Knight Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan. Wellford also curates photography and multimedia shows that address topical issues in the world.
   

Eligibility

Contest is open to professional and amateur US and international photographers. SDN staff, volunteers, advisory committee members, judges, and their families are not eligible to enter the competition. Previous SDN Call for Entries winners are not eligible to enter.

Winner Notification

Winners will be contacted by May 25, 2014.
Tax liability in connection with any Prize is the responsibility of the winners.

Entry Fees

$25 for one exhibit entry of 6 – 24 images and one multimedia piece. All fees must be paid using a credit card on the SDN website. International credit cards are accepted. All entry submissions and fees are final and non-refundable.
All entries are automatically and simultaneously submitted for exhibition on the SocialDocumentary.net website and must follow all rules and regulations regarding exhibits on SDN. See SDN website for further information on fees. www.socialdocumentary.net
Exhibits on SocialDocumentary.net need to be approved before going live (click here for more information). In the event that an entry to the Call for Entries is not accepted for the SDN website, the photographer may make changes to their exhibit and re-submit, at no additional cost, up until the entry deadline.

Penland School of Arts & Crafts - Resident Artist Program

The Photographic Center Northwest is pleased to announce Documentary: 19th Annual Photo Exhibition, and our esteemed juror, Whitney C. Johnson. This year the theme is documentary. A minimum of 4 images required with your entry and an artist statement is encouraged. Selected entries will be exhibited in Seattle, WA at the Photo Center August 2014. All photo processes are welcome.

Juror: Whitney C. Johnson is the Director of Photography at The New Yorker where she oversees the photographic vision for the print magazine, digital editions, and the website. She produced and edited the photo essays "Service" and "Portraits of Power", which won National Magazine Awards in 2009 and 2010, and contributes regularly to Photo Booth, the magazine's photography blog. Before joining the magazine, Johnson worked at the Open Society Foundations, coordinating a grant competition for photographers and the Moving Walls exhibition.
Johnson teaches at New York University's Tisch School for the Arts, Columbia University's School of Journalism, and the International Center of Photography, and is on the advisory council of the Alexia Foundation. She holds a BA in American Literature from Barnard College, and pursued postgraduate work in American Studies at Columbia University.

Center for Photography at Woodstock

ARTISTS

CPW presents year-round group and solo exhibitions. Group exhibitions include guest and in-house curated shows and our annual juried members show Photography Now.
Solo exhibitions are selected by CPW’s staff who work one-on-one with artists to plan and present their exhibition.
CPW’s exhibition program focus on emerging and under-recognized image makers who are currently creating work.
As CPW champions photography’s plurality of approaches, we welcome submissions from artists who use photography, digital imagery, multi-media, and/or installations that incorporate photographic imagery.
Please note: We review work every 3-4 months; expect us to have your work for that period. CPW is not responsible for unlabeled material or those sent without a SASE or with inadequate return postage. Please do not send original prints. We do not review unsolicited URL submissions.

How to submit
CPW accepts submissions in digital format, CD-ROM’s and accepts video works in DVD format.

Submissions should include:
• Work Samples (Digital files should be sent in JPEG format, with a maximum length of 2200 pixels wide and/or a maximum height of 1800 pixels – Please, no flash or html presentations, send image files only).
