OPTIMIZING IMAGES FOR THE WEB:

The goal of optimizing your image files for the web is to have images that load quickly, look great and are not so large that someone could download and print your photograph.

The easiest way I have found to do this is to set the longest edge of the image at 700 pixels. Then, save as a JPG with quality of around 8 depending on the image (or Save for Web Quality: 70). You want to end up with a file size around 250k.

College Art Competition DEADLINE: November 22nd FREE Submission!

The City of Savannah is seeking submissions of original student artwork depicting the beauty of our historic City Hall building to display in a permanent exhibit in City Hall’s fourth floor rotunda.  Submissions will be digitized and posted online and the winners will be chosen by an online vote of Savannah’s citizens.  The winning entries will be framed and displayed by the City of Savannah in City Hall for all our citizens and visitors to enjoy.  These works will become the property of the City of Savannah and will not be returned to the artists.  Work not selected for permanent exhibit will be returned to the artists after they are temporarily displayed in City Hall for the exhibit opening.

SPE National Student Scholarship

SPE student members can apply for scholarships to offset the cost of attending SPE's 2014 national conference in Baltimore March 6-9, 2014. All awards include a 2014 national conference fee waiver and a one-year membership to SPE. SPE AWARDS Ten SPE Awards are offered and feature a $500 travel stipend to attend the national conference. THE SPE AWARD FOR INNOVATIONS IN IMAGING The SPE Award for Innovations in Imaging is open to all eligible students working primarily with digital technology and is designated for work only possible because of emerging digital technologies-no alternative processes or gelatin silver prints. A project description describing how the work is possible as a result of emerging digital technologies is required as part of the submission process. Jurors will seek to award work that demonstrates the most innovative, unique, and freshest uses of digital technologies. One award is offered and includes a $500 travel stipend to attend the national conference. A Seat At The Table is a conceptually-driven, juried exhibition of artist books that give voice to concepts, ideas, behaviors, beliefs, and experiences that relate or speak to everyday social life. Selected books should be able to open dialogue about the human experiences in diverse ways. We are open to multiple interpretations of the artist book medium, including both traditional book-binded forms as well as (but not limited to) those works that use books as a reference or metaphor to create other conceptual forms. Examples might explore the interchangeable use of of mixed-media, painting, drawing, printmaking, fiber arts, photography, sculpture, ceramics, sound, film/video, and installations in the creation or referencing of the book form. 

While book forums that include photography are acceptable, photo books that have been made using drag and drop computer software templates will not be considered; however, photographic books that juxtapose concepts such as, word, text, and meaning in unique ways are welcome. Note: the inclusion of text is not required.

Life is full of remarkable experiences, unique people, beautiful things, the delightful and the bizarre; all of these can present as wondrous indeed.

JUROR | PHILLIP TOLEDANO

Phillip Toledano was born in London to a French Moroccan, and an American father and is currently living and working in New York City. He believes that photographs should be like unfinished sentences. there should always be space for questions. Phillip’s work is socio-political, and varies in medium, from photography to installation.

Mr. Toledano has four monographs published on his artistic practice, with the most recent, a new Kind of Beauty being received with critical acclaim. His work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The New York Times magazine, The New Yorker, Esquire, GQ, Wallpaper, The London Times, The Independent Magazine, Le Monde and Interview amongst others.

AWARDS

With selection for this exhibition, featured artist’s work will be seen by an inter- national audience of collectors, curators, art consultants and other advocates of fine art photography. Each participant will be included in the Center’s Main Gallery exhibition and Online Gallery exhibition. In order to be included in the online gallery or to receive and award, you must participate in the gallery exhibition.

ELIGIBILITY The exhibition is open to all photographers world wide, both amateur and professional. The Center invites photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to participate in its exhibitions.

EXHIBIT PRINTS: All images accepted for exhibition must be printed and framed or mounted professionally. The Center recognizes that some work is non traditional and incorporates the framing as an integral part of the presentation. Please no colored mats or frames. Black or white mats and frames only, unless you obtain prior approval. To encourage participation by photographers from around the world, the Center offers optional, professional, economical printing and framing services. Additional details will be provided upon request.

ACCEPTANCE NOTICE: Everyone who submits will receive an email notification of which images were accepted. Accepted images will be posted on the Center’s website along with instructions for the gallery presentation.

USE RIGHTS: Each artist retains all copyrights to their own images. By submission for jurying, artists whose submissions are chosen for the exhibition grant The Center for Fine Art Photography the right to use their images for the purpose of promoting exhibitions, promoting the Center’s programs, promoting the artist and subsequent display on the Center’s website of current and past exhibitions. People are always in places, and portrait photographs can use those places to expand our understanding 
of the individual being portrayed. For the exhibition FIGURES | CONTEXTS we seek photographs that 
present one or more individuals in a setting that enlarges our understanding of the subject. For instance, 
the setting can be play a metaphoric function, it can provide further insight into the person or persons being 
portrayed, or it can be an environment that enlarges our understanding of the meaning of the portrait. We 
are very pleased to announce that Cig Harvey will be the juror for this exhibition. Known for her amazing 
portraits, most recently featured in her book You Look at Me Like an Emergency, and a series of recent 
solo exhibition, Cig is one of the most important photographers working today in the medium of creative 
portraiture.

Root Division invites artists working in all fields to submit work for an exhibition entitled The Tools.

The Tools is a look through the wrong end of the telescope, examining art as apparatus and instrument. The show will contain both implements artists have constructed in view of executing their work, along with work that itself functions as a tool.

Works considered for the show could be:

1. Utensils, models, devices, objects or systems crafted specifically to advance the artist’s working process.

2. Works that are themselves in dialogue with the function or aesthetic of tools.

The curator encourages artists who entertain a novel function for tools through a broad range of materials, media, and approaches.

The Tools is an investigation of the structure and support that underpin an artist’s production, and the ways that production may itself launch new approaches to critique, education, or expression. The show aims to push against the notion of tool as a primarily physical aid. In the words of Robert Irwin, “The act of art is a tool for extended consciousness."

This call for entries is meant to complete a show that currently includes the work of 6 artists.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

PHOTOBOOK 2013, an annual competition, is open to photographers in the United States and abroad* who have self-published a photography book via printing/publishing firms or on-demand (blurb, lulu, viovio, iphoto, etc.)  that produces commercial quality printing and binding.

Entrants may submit up to three different titles that are self-published photography books of any size, format, or style: hard cover, soft cover, case-wraps, landscape, portrait, square, color, black and white.

Submissions will be judged on the basis of: cover design, strength of the photography, subject matter of the book, page layouts, editing and sequencing and emotional impact of the overall book. All judging is at the complete discretion of the gallery and all decisions of the gallery are final.

All Submissions must be original works of authorship created by the photographer who submits the Submission*

You’ll send one (returnable) “jury copy” of each book to the gallery for jurying.

By entering, Contestant warrants that your Submission does not infringe any third party’s rights, and that you have obtained any necessary permissions from any third party to submit the Submission.

Once entered, all Submissions are final; no changes or edits may be made to your book.

ART. 1 – GOALS
The Italian Cultural Association MoCA (Modern Contemporary Art), in collaboration with Arte Laguna Studio, organizes the 8th Edition of the International Arte Laguna Prize, aimed at promoting and enhancing Contemporary Art. The total amount of the Prize is € 180000.
The Prize obtained a medal from the President of the Italian Republic, with the patronage of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Veneto Region, Cà Foscari University of Venice, the European Institute of Design among others and and is held in cooperation with the Municipality of Venice - Presidency of the Council. The contest features the awarding of cash prizes, the organization of a major collective exhibition in Venice, exhibitions in international Art Galleries, collaborations with Companies, Art Residencies and the publication of the catalogue. The free-subject Prize is divided into five sections: painting, sculpture and installation, photographic art, video art and performance, virtual and digital art.

ART. 2 – TECHNIQUES

The Prize is open to all Artists, with no restrictions of age, sex, nationality or any other qualifications. Each artist can participate with one or more artworks, also in more than one section. Below the technical details:
Painting – works realized with technical and stylistic freedom (oil, tempera, acrylic, ink, vinyl, watercolor, graphite, pencil, collage, etc.) on any support (canvas, paper, wood, plastics, iron, etc.). The maximum size allowed for each work is 175 cm per side. It is possible to submit polyptycs as one single work, as long as they fall within the overall 175 cm; they must be submitted as multiple works if the total size exceeds 175 cm
Sculpture and Installation – works created with any organic or inorganic material. Works can include sounds, lights, videos, mechanical or electrical movements. The maximum size allowed for each work is: base 4 meters, depth 4 meters, height 8 meters, and no weight limits.
The author of the sculpture or installation, if selected as a finalist for the collective exhibition, will have to provide the head office of the Prize with all the necessary material for mounting the artwork.
Photographic Art – photographs on analog or digital support, photos including digital elaborations. Works entirely created using the computer can be submitted in the Digital Art section. It is possible to submit series of photographs as one single work, as long as the whole series falls within the overall 175 cm; they must be submitted as multiple works if the total size exceeds 175 cm
Video Art – videos, films and works made with any animation techniques on any digital and analog support. Works must last 15 minutes at most, opening titles and closing credits included. For the final exhibition artists have to send the original works saved on DVD in high quality and in formats compatible with the mostly used reading systems.
Performance – Every artist or group of artists can participate with one or more performances, using any technique, expressive form and with the use of any support materials provided by the artist. Finalist artists will perform live on the opening night, in a version which does not exceed 10 minutes. Copyright and SIAE rights must be provided for works that include non original music or images, if necessary.
Virtual and Digital Art – works entirely created using the computer or digital applications and devices: images, videos, installations, performances in which the use of digital media plays a key role in the creative process and content; net art, software, smartphone or tablet applications, interactive devices, videogames, augmented reality projects, rapid prototyping, etc.

The selection of the submitted artworks will be made by an international jury composed of 10 members subdivided into the five contest categories, with the art direction of curator Igor Zanti.

About this Tutorial

DEADLINE: OCTOBER 25TH AT MIDNIGHT

Two fellowship recipients will be awarded $3,000 each and a solo exhibition at HCP in the summer of 2014. One Houston-based artist (residing within a 100 mile radius of Houston including the Beaumont, Galveston, and College Station areas) will receive the Carol Crow Memorial Fellowship and another artist from anywhere in the world, outside the Houston area, will receive the HCP Fellowship. Elisabeth Biondi, Independent Curator (New York, NY) will jury the fellowship selection.

Contest Guidelines:

IMAGE CAPTURE: Images may be captured using film or digital. Only CD/DVD will be accepted for entry. No prints!

PORTFOLIOS: A portfolio unit consists of no fewer than 8 images and no more than 12.

ENTRY FEES: Fee for the first portfolio unit is $45. Each additional portfolio unit is $30.

Art Mapping Startup Artsy Releases iPhone App

Artsy, a startup attempting to catalogue all the world’s art in an online depository where works can be discovered and purchased, today announced the launch of an app for iPhone and iPod touch.

The free app, designed for iOs 7, has over 50,000 high-resolution images from more than 600 museums, galleries, art fairs and foundations, including works from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Gagosian Gallery. The design is sleek and smart – when your iPhone is turned sideways, paintings appear in a simulated gallery setting.
