American Photography 29 Call For Entries is open to all photographers, art directors, designers, editors, agencies and publishers.

Regarded as the book of record, American Photography is still produced in all its defiant, large-format, luxurious, hard cover glory, offering high visibility and well-deserved recognition.

Submit your best work to be presented in the books, one image per page, and online in The Archive for all the world to see.

The deadline for submissions is February 1, 2013.

Like I mentioned in class, if you get accepted into one of their shows, they offer a printing service (for a minimal fee) & a framing & matting service (FOR FREE!), so that's pretty cool.

Saturday Night Event

Abstraction March 27 - April 27, 2013

Like any abstract art, abstract photography is an exploration of color, form, movement, or other intangibles that need not be wedded to a recognizable subject. Unlike other mediums, photography was designed to reproduce the world as we see it with technical precision. Abstract photography uses this technological capability to break down our world, revealing it anew in surprising ways. Extreme close-ups, long exposures, and blurred subjects are just some of the ways that photographers chose and manipulate their subjects to express themselves. Such work is limited only by the imagination. For Abstraction, The Kiernan Gallery seeks images that partially or fully obscure the recognizable world.

Damion Berger: In The Deep End

Damion Berger is another photographer who's work I find very fascinating. His series "In The Deep End" is comprised of underwater shots made at public swimming pools. I love his series statement and how he explains the intentionality behind using black & white to further enhance the series.

Diana Scherer: Nurture Studies

I find the work of Diana Scherer very interesting, particularly her Nurture Studies. Basically, she forced plants to grow in various vases over a period of 6 months. Then at the end of that 6 month period, she removed the vase and photographed the structure of the soil & the roots.

regarding the 'packet' ::: business cards

With regards to packet contents, there are a number of fun sites that illustrate the infinite possibilities of printed cards and design ideas. Here are just a few that came up in a rudimentary search.

This first one offers an overview of the techniques and production considerations if you want to do something more exotic than just a straight printed card:

The next one just has interesting examples of how designers / clients interpret a business card. Some are clever and some are overdone, but here you go regardless:

The Society for Photographic Education will host their annual national conference in Chicago, IL, March 7-10, 2013. It is the 50th anniversaryand likely to sell out.
